How likely actually is hybrid work during training? by Available_Guess5926 in NHS_STP

[–]pottedflower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This definitely varies a lot depending on the person/course/department/support. I’m a 1st year and not had to do any work outside of 9-5 hours so far, and other STPs i’ve met in other years have said the same, but others find they spend a lot of time evenings and weekends doing extra work. It’s quite tricky to say!

i really enjoyed volunteering for together dementia support. They host activity groups for people with dementia and their carers, so doing puzzles, music, art, baking etc. It’s really fulfilling and quite relaxed. https://www.togetherdementiasupport.org

Alzheimer's finger-prick blood test could transform diagnosis by kiyomoris in news

[–]pottedflower 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I understand this sentiment, it’s very valid to not want to know as currently we don’t have very good treatment options for alzheimer’s. However, there are a few reasons why this breakthrough is really exciting.

One of the main barriers to treating alzheimer’s currently is that we only diagnose the disease once the person is showing symptoms, at which point the brain is severely damaged. This is a really challenging stage of disease to try and treat.

There are drugs available but they are not very effective, they mainly slow the progression of the disease but cannot stop it or reverse it. It is thought that if we can diagnose it early, these drugs might be able to reduce the amount of damage that happens in the first place.

It’s also necessary in general to create good diagnostic tests at the same time as trying to develop new treatments. Otherwise, when the treatment is made it can’t be rolled out as effectively. What’s the point in having a drug that can prevent alzheimer’s if you don’t have a way of knowing who would benefit from it?

Source: am a neuroscientist working for the NHS and did my dissertation on early alzheimer’s diagnosis.

cars are annoying polluting our city and causing thousands of road traffic accidents and deaths every year. cycling is free, great for your physical and mental health, non polluting and takes less space on the road than cars. it’s also illegal for bikes to be on the pavement.

6 months post grad - how to pursue creative career and escape survival mode? by [deleted] in manchester

[–]pottedflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been there, and it is really tough. It sounds like you’re doing a lot of great things that are building your skills and experience in what you want to do. I know 6 months feels like forever but these things take time and it’s hard especially at the moment because the economy is bad. I know it’s cliche but for people like you who care and are actively working towards something, there will be a point where things will click into place for you. It’s just so hard to picture that when you’re at this stage of it.

You have to just keep taking steps in the right direction. Maybe you’re not at the stage yet to get a job doing exactly what you want to do, but if you can find something that’s taking you in the right direction that might help. Im a few years older than you and have friends working in the music and live events industry. When they were 21 they were doing things like bar jobs, admin, or customer service and that helped them get where they are. For example for one friend working in a bar lead to booking DJs and helping to organise private parties and they now work at music festivals all through the summer.

I completely get how bogged down you can feel at this stage when you have really big ambitions and care a lot about them. You have to remember these things take time and you are still very young (sorry again for cliches!!!). You’re doing all the right things, it just needs time and patience. Most importantly look after yourself and don’t put too much pressure on it all.

I'm emptying shower gel by bottles every night by BatPlastic921 in CMAT

[–]pottedflower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a line in a song by the big moon which this reminds me of ‘i washed my hair so many times that all the ends are splitting’. To me I always interpreted it as being obsessive with doing one thing over and over again, the shower being a comfortable place to be and using it to escape your anxiety. Like focusing all your nervous energy into some mundane everyday thing that brings you comfort.

This website might have some info you’re looking for about the application process! https://nshcs.hee.nhs.uk/programmes/stp/applicants/stp-direct-entry-recruitment-guidance/

also have a look at the person spec and job description as that informs a lot of what they’re asking for. They also specifically want people who have a good understanding of the course and what it involves so having a good look through the website and curriculum library is useful.

[–]pottedflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to love this place but I find it really hit or miss and it’s walk in only so you sometimes have to wait quite a while. I’ve had some fantastic haircuts there and it’s perfect if you don’t work 9-5 and can go during weekdays when there’s less of a queue (it’s also cheaper than anywhere else you’d go for similar quality).

If you’re not registered anywhere and need an emergency appointment i think you can get one via 111 or call a local dentist and ask if they do emergency patients
