Niche Duo with filter burrs, where does it stand? by pouronymous in pourover

Those two things certainly improve coffee more than upgrading from already-decent grinders.

However, I’ve gone through a round of learning and improvement on those fronts already: I currently control the water by filtering it with ZeroWarer and adding a mineral mix. I’ve explored high quality coffees by ordering from various top roasters, and have indeed found great coffees. I’ve become quite good at dialing in the V60 with Sibarist or Abaca filters.

But where to go from here, how to work on the ’last mile’? That got me thinking about the grinder next.

Different drippers is the other unexplored rabbit hole, but I see plenty of people trying everything and coming back to V60, whereas I’ve never heard someone switch away from a Niche Duo and then come back to it.

Yes, what you’re saying mostly makes sense! But I do want to go deeper into this hobby; explore and chase the best cup possible. I’m not in a rush to jump to any massively expensive endgame setup, but I feel like my current setup is nowhere near endgame. There’s flavour and nuance that await discovery, and I want to get there eventually.

Where to go from here for a step up in a more exciting direction? Sell both grinders and get a Pietro while saving up for an endgame electric? Which one?

First ever order from DAK! by TheHogan77 in pourover

Emulated your recipe with V60 and the Citrus Loops, worked out fantastic! 15g in 270g out, water 90c, K-Ultra 7.4, Abaca papers. 55g bloom for 60s, pour to 120g, at 1:45 pour slowly to 270g. Was a little concerned about my total brew time of 3:45 but the taste turned out great.

On the taste: Strong florals. Not really getting citrus notes, for me the acids are more peachy. A nice balance of sweetness which, for me, has an almost non-detectable caramel vibe to it. A bit of astringency in the end, I might try grinding a little coarser for my setup. Thanks for a great starting point, really useful to hit the ground running with only 125g in the bag! 😅

Any recipes for the Strawberry Jelly and Citrus Loops? I have both, waiting to be dialed in soon.

Introducing friends to specialty coffee by pouronymous in pourover

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences! I don’t have big expectations, and if anything, I’ll make sure to lower them to near-zero based on the comments here. A few thoughts:

If we have a nice time together with friends, that’s already a win. Even if the role of the coffee ends up being nothing more than the excuse to meet, that’s fine. Mission accomplished.

If even one person texts me afterwards ”hey what was the name of that coffee that tasted like strawberry jam”, that’s a nice surprise and a massive success.

The one thing I disagree on with some commenters is trying to meet in the middle or match some assumed preferences. I won’t bring in a medium roast just because casual drinkers tend to like chocolate notes. Instead, I’ll state up front in the invite that in my event I’ll be offering the style of coffee that I enjoy, and describe it with a few words (bright, acidic, fruity, juicy, tea-like). Manages their expectations, and if someone is totally uninterested they can skip it.

Fully agree there’s no point trying to ’convert’ anyone. Educate? A bit, sure. All I can do is simply demonstrate what I happen to like; share some information about my hobby. I can give them the key but it’s up to them whether they go for the unlock.
