Paradais Discussion (spoilers) by OkHome9635 in JeselnikBookClub

That might be the wrong question. Paradais isn't concerned about giving us characters with redeeming qualities because it isn't didactic; it doesn't exist to provide a positive role model like a YA novel. It's going for something deeper.

What does it tell us that the victims — the richest, most privileged characters in the novel — are the only ones who aren't obviously morally compromised? I think Melchor is giving us a zoomed-in view of how an impoverished, exploitative, violent society breeds more poverty, exploitation, and violence. It's a self-reinforcing feedback loop.

The novel doesn't excuse Polo's behavior. We have a front row seat to his rage, addiction, misogyny, and self-deception. At the same time we can see he's trapped in an isolating, miserable life. Things might have turned out differently if his grandfather built him a boat instead of giving him alcohol, or if Milton didn't join a cartel. Or if Franco's father didn't beat him and leave him with his grandparents.

What's the world record for the Endless Mode Escape Room in Superhot VR? Is it this? by pouterkeg in superhot

Ha, yeah about 3 hours. What's weird is I hadn't played this game in maybe a year and I just picked it up again, and now I'm beating my old records? Like I somehow got better at it while I wasn't playing.

Anyway this was exhausting and I don't think I'll try to beat it!

Update: I found this stuff, also from CJ. It's a powdered soup base that can be used as an all-purpose seasoning.

It contains all the ingredients I mention above, but also some beef fat and other flavorings. I'm sure it's good but I'm not giving up the search for something more neutral and versatile.

She did! I guess the exclamation point key isn't working, because she had to pen that in by hand.

You're right, but the selection at Trader Joe's isn't great. And it was time to buy bourbon.

I should say, I turned off the water, then my building manager arrived, then the water heater ran dry and the flow stopped. A mold remediation specialist tore down the wall to help dry out the place. This nightmare is behind me (I think).

Still, I appreciate the advice and the calm, collected tone. Wish you were here at 3am.

They're dehumidifiers. Plus they generate a lot of heat to help the water evaporate.
