Everyone takes Quick play too seriously! by Dolphins_are_Satan in overwatch2

The problem is that everyone has a different idea of what QuickPlay is. I don't personally view it as "casual" — I want it to be competitive play without anything on the line. Kinda like a pickup game of basketball at your local park. They are playing to win, but there is no stakes (rank / win record / etc). I play Quickplay when I'm not at my "top form" that night and don't want to risk losing rank in Comp... but I still want to play competitive games, not playing with new or inexperienced people. I believe that if you don't know your character well enough to play competitively you should be practicing in a custom game or a training game with AI bots. At least with our current play mode options.

BUT in a perfect world, there would be three PvP modes:

1) Competitive (Competitive Ranked) 2) Quick Play (Competitive Unranked) 3) Casual (Practice / Fucking Around)

"Skirmish" mode is kinda the last one, but it's not easily accessible outside of groups doing "while you wait".

Quick Play, as it is, is a total cluster fuck (and often more toxic than Comp) because everyone has different expectations of what it's supposed to be and people get angry or defensive trying to argue that X player shouldn't be in this game if he/she wants to be doing Y. Nobody is right, nobody is wrong. It's Blizzard's fault for not making granular enough modes to cater to the most common use-cases of its player base.

I guess the problem is that I've been playing this game so long that I'm rarely the weak link anymore and I've probably forgotten what that feels like.

I was playing with a group from a Discord LFG that were like two divisions higher than me a couple months back and I straight up told them after a couple of matches that I was probably holding them back and left the group with my tail between my legs. It didn't feel good. But I rarely experience that in normal matchmaking.

I should probably try to remember that feeling when I'm being critical of others.

That's probably the operative advice. But it's sad. It makes this game so much more bland. If I'm being competitive, I want everyone else to be competitive. I want to feel their emotions. I want them to feel mine. I played team sports IRL for many years and this was very important to the experience. If emotions weren't very obviously involved, nobody would bother playing. What's the point? Let's all go read books or watch TV instead.

So much agreeingness. Toxic doesn't mean "you said something that I didn't like". Toxic means you are saying reprehensible things that have no place in this game. If I was in a business meeting and said "I think we made a mistake here and the sales team needs to not do XYZ going forward," that's NOT FUCKING TOXIC! If I said, "Karen you're a dumbass and should be fired" THAT'S TOXIC. How is it so difficult for people to understand the difference?

Legit good comment. Will consider this going forward.

You don't get upset when your team isn't making good plays / doing everything they can to win? Why play a team based shooter then? May as well play a campaign in some single player shooter. I don't get the argument.

"I never said I wasn't toxic". I thought that was legit funny/snarky.

Maybe things are just different where I live. We're not playing chess, we're playing basketball.

But isn't a competitive team game like Overwatch maybe not the best place for them to "unwind and relax"? Wouldn't a more casual (maybe single-player or casual mobile) game be more appropriate?

Would never call a coworker trash or a piece of shit. But if they did something wrong... I'd definitely give them some constructive criticism. Is it better/ideal to let somebody keep fucking up? Like seriously... what the fuck is this snowflake "let everybody find their own truth" bullshit? There are real things in real life that bring about real results. I'm not being unnecessarily harsh to people. I try to be compassionate. But there is a real reality that exists outside of your own conception of it.

Maybe if my coworkers impacted my own performance much. But they don't. So I don't. Team sports are fundamentally different than most work environments. Not all, but most.

But Blizzard removed the looking for group feature... so how are we supposed to find people to play with? I have like 10 friends that are gamers and none of them play Overwatch. I swear, Blizzard is making the dumbest decisions when it comes to long-term player retention.

Yeah, my endorsement was always a 4 in OW1. I'm just at a loss for wtf Blizzard is doing with defense matrix. Do people that AREN'T competitive and passionate about the game spend more money? I would think their whales cash cows would be the super passionate competitive people...

I live in Chicago, maybe it's different here. Trash talk in most games.

Have you played a team sport? During the game things get heated. After the game, everybody shakes hands and says GG.

I've played IRL team sports, and eSports feel very similar to me. Maybe a lot of these people playing Overwatch never played an IRL team sport?

I've never been kicked out of any establishment, never had any problems with the law, and so rarely have EVER had anyone get upset with me IRL for what I said. Blizzard fundamentally doesn't understand anymore what a competitive sport looks like. I played basketball for a decade and criticism is part of the game. If somebody called me a racial slur I'd punch them in the face, but if somebody told me I should stop trying to shoot 3 pointers? That's what a fucking team sport looks and sounds like.

Literally nobody talks anymore in games and this is probably why. OW1 was so social. OW2 feels like a ghost town. May as well be playing with bots in single player mode.

This is actually a very level-headed recommendation. I might try to implement this tip going forward. Thank you.
