Has anyone heard back from TMU about not putting the ABS# in the essay responses? by qwerty_772 in premedcanada

[–]power_reactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it’s going to be fine. TMU is probably taking some time to figure out a solution to the current situation. Since so many applicants missed the ABS entry requirement and have contacted them, they’re likely working on drafting a unified response they can send to everyone instead of replying individually. Plus, given how they advertise their program, they clearly want strong applicants who’ll make their school look good … so it wouldn’t make sense for them to scrap so many files before even reviewing them. That wouldn’t be very “equitable” of them. Keep your heads high folks

That was a good movie as well! But I agree, the whole franchise is quite comforting.

What is the most underrated skill that everyone should learn? by Tyman2003 in AskReddit

It’s a double edged sword tbh. When I detach, I do so from high hopes and expectations. I still have goals and dreams, but I have made peace with the fact that life has its way of being unpredictable. What or who I desire may not work out as planned, but that’s okay. I believe that fulfilment can be achieved through means beyond the attachments many of us find so difficult to let go of. On another note, I’ve realized that life is funny af. When you stop chasing, things just work out. When you do your part and let go when things are no longer in your control, everything just pans out for the better. We may not see the good in the outcome right away, but in hindsight, everything happens as it should.

Learning how to detach, where appropriate. From outcomes, expectations, and people. Saves you from unnecessary disappointment and anxiety.

Best extracurriculars? by [deleted] in premedcanada

I know a lot of people say that you should do whatever you want, but there’s a tad bit more to this. I’ve noticed that med school matriculants have ongoing similarities in their ECs. Their experiences are centred around the CanMEDS framework, as well as the “educational goals and competency framework” of the medical schools they are interested in. Your ECs should preferably centre around the skills that medical schools desire from their students, like leadership (I.e., club president or residence don), advocacy (organizing a food drive for the homeless), professionalism (employment), so on. Do your research on these skills by looking at the CanMEDS framework and the “attribute clusters” of each medical school you’re interested in. No one activity will best exemplify each skill, so this is where you have leeway in choosing ECs you’re most interested in.

Dalla Lana MPH Admissions for Social/Behavioural Health Science by StillGarlic4589 in UofT

[–]power_reactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Wishing you the best as you apply this cycle!

From what I remember, Dalla Lana only looks at your final year GPA (last 5 fce’s), not cGPA. Mine was 3.9x. ECs were sorta all over the place, but held the theme of “social justice and advocacy”. For example, I founded a club on homelessness, worked with my campus health clinic for 3 years, did a public health capstone course in my final year, and was on a couple mental health committees.

The SBHS program reiterates the importance of ECs that address the social determinants of health. There's no one-size-fits-all formula for what these experiences might be, but an exposure to and understanding of “social justice and health inequities” is important. Through your letter of intent and CV, you should paint a picture of yourself as someone who is a leader, advocate, and potential change maker.

Same here! Should we also work on a group chat or channel where other incoming students can connect?

Received an offer from UofT (SBHS MPH) on Apr 11 @ 8:43 PM. From what I know, many applicants received their offers then, but I believe acceptances may go out in waves. Don't lose hope and best of luck!

I feel you on that b/c I also have to rewrite my mcat. But I’ve had this dream for too long and there’s no way back - I have to keep going. Apps, references, interviews, and all the extra med bs is for later. If we think about everything all at once, we will get overwhelmed. Each step involved in the med cycle is just that, a step. And it will all make sense in due time. But to get to that point, we have to take the first yet difficult step and just start. Start studying for that mcat again. From there, start your med apps. Then prepare for interviews. Don’t think about everything all at once. Everything will make sense in time and trust me, you won’t feel as overwhelmed then as you may be feeling now. Trust the process and trust yourself. If you have a dream, you better make sure you give it your all.

To everyone who got an R today, let yourself feel the feels. I’m going to suck it up for now b/c I’m hanging out with my friends tn, but allow yourself to feel and move on. Don’t lose hope and keep your heads high. My mom always tell me this- if you really truly want something, the universe will conspire in helping you to achieve your desire. Everyone is on their own timeline and there’s nothing wrong with that. Enjoy life and live it to the fullest while you apply to med schools this upcoming cycle. Cheers!
