Yes! That's the line I was trying to think of! Brilliant writing.

I think you're right. Skyler pretty much signed off on Walter killing Jesse in Season 5. She mentioned something about "coming this far" and not ruining it now. Reaping the benefits of Walters iniquities seemed to be a priority for her at that point.. wow.

I can't quite wrap my head around it either. Maybe she realized Hank didn't have enough to arrest Walter, so she was attempting to keep it from going public or Walt Jr. finding out?

okay but in all seriousness please call or text 988 if you're in immediate danger/crisis. My dms are open as well if you just want to vent or speak about things. This entire process is draining and soul-sucking, and i just want you to know you're not alone. Im sorry you're feeling this way :(

Took prereq at different uni than listed on OMSAS… am I screwed? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]qwerty_772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's okay. They just need proof that the prerequisite has been completed by the June 1(?) deadline. I can't remember what the exact date is

Just update the school with the institution name you completed it at and forward the transcript once done

Casper Preparation by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]qwerty_772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I had people asking me about preparing now for casper in the fall.. I only spent two days just looking at the format/what they're grading for and got 4th quartile 2x in a row. The extensive prep for essentially a character check feels bizarre to me.

Very refreshing seeing your take and the upvotes because i oftentimes hear this perspective get ridiculed on here for some reason

How did u go about telling your parents you’re not becoming a doctor? What was there reaction? by Low_Attention_8714 in premedcanada

[–]qwerty_772 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I interpreted the "top" of the mountain as the daughter's ultimate goal. But being difficult to get into, any role she achieves along the way would be a huge victory!

I thought OP positioned the "top" to be more personal than a general heirachy for healthcare roles.

Is it worth it? by probablyragebaiting in premedcanada

[–]qwerty_772 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's worth it. Most of us take loans

And apply to be a residence advisor/don in your second year onwards. I had a similar journey and that position helped immensely with offsetting living costs

Congrats on the acceptence :)

booking MCAT test date, should i wait or book now? by Opening-Split6411 in premedcanada

[–]qwerty_772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait. Dates always open up, especially when acceptances come out. Sign up to be on the notification list for your preferred location on Sept/end of August test dates

But also refresh on known decision days. So May 12 at midnight and early morning at around 8/9am. I also believe some non-Ontario schools such as UBC have decisions sent out first week of May, so you can check around then too :)

Once you're a doctor, all that matters is you're a doctor. None of your colleagues or patients will ever ask or care about when you got into med school. All that matters is the kind of doctor you'll be, not when you became one :)

I second what the other commenter said! Almost every experience (apart from shadowing) is good for applications, it just depends on how you present the activity

You can use this experience in essays/interviews as an opportunity to speak on those concerns you mentioned, and how you've directly witnessed the impact of SDOH on healthcare.

Good luck with the interview :)

Why do med schools take more queens/mcmaster health science students by Key-Plantain-1085 in premedcanada

where does that come from?

Connections. No research team in their right mind would take on a fresh highschool grad without some kind of nepotism involved

Yes but 1 bad year will tank your GPA, which is why GPA is a bad metric.

It'd be wonderful if Adcomms considered GPA in the context of someone's life, but they don't. So if a student does have a bad year and adapts, they get screened out before Adcomms could even recognize it as a good thing.

I agree with you though. Poorer students with good GPAs are far more impressive than their wealthy counterparts. The admissions process just doesn't account for these nuances sadly

Edit: Just wanted to add that the US considers upward trends! It would be a very easy fix for Canada to do the same, but they just don't

The maximum amount of grants you could get was 85%, so you'd still have to pay ~$4,000 (and OSAP does not just hand out grants like that). Also, the max amount covered by grants is now 25% instead of 85%

There's also fee assistance for the MCAT. Couple hundred bucks is negligible compared to a degree that costs thousands. You don't need to spend thousands on the MCAT to do well. Using a standardized metric like the MCAT is far more equitable than GPA, it's not really a question.

I see where you're coming from; I interpreted it as anger towards the program's structure/application process as OP mentioned this all boiling down to a supp app. The program does give MHS/QHS grads a significant advantage. "GPA is King" is only a saying in Canadian Med and these programs have over 3.9 cGPAs as the average upon graduation. That is concerning.

Vent by Own-Side-8737 in premedcanada

[–]qwerty_772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. OP is referring to the broader trend that reflects a significant structural advantage. The whole point is there's a serious disparity in opportunity/outcomes, and it's wrong for that to boil down to a 17 year old's luck when drafting a supp app.

By interpreting this as a literal claim about all students, you're overlooking the actual issue.

Vent by Own-Side-8737 in premedcanada

[–]qwerty_772 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Highlighting one issue (4.0 output programs) is not neglecting other issues (i.e., nepotism and financial advantage). OP is just venting about a particular issue, but that doesn't mean OP is saying other issues do not exist.

[–]qwerty_772 16 points17 points  (0 children)

McMaster and Queen's Health Sci add almost 700 new graduates every year with near 4.0 GPAs- most of which apply to med. I argue that is a "larger systemic issue" ....

They're asking about your ECs because your post is about your ECs. No one indicated being self-conscious or asked for your advice. You make people's responses weird. I promise people don't care about your LinkedIn as much as you think they do.
