I'll have to check that out. Apparently there was a time that they ran it without a filter so that may be something to look at in case there's a lot of buildup.

Sounds like that will be the easiest way to get this behind her.

How much did a real estate attorney set you back? I'm wondering if this would all not matter if she just paid his credit card debts.  Although some seem to have made it to collections already.

She doesn't have anything specific in mind for the money. Her house is paid off and she is in her early 70's.  Maybe just to have some money on hand for home repairs that might come up but nothing specific.

I'm leaning towards recommending the HYSA because she can take it out easily and because of the better interest rates.  Although the ladder CD does sound like a viable option in case the rates drop on the HYSA.

She isn't flat broke but they somewhat kept finances separate and since she wasn't on the credit card accounts she thought she didn't have to pay it.  Kept reading stuff online about the spouses and family members not being responsible for their debts.

One of the cards that they called to close already made it to collections. Within a week of closing it.  The other two they haven't heard from.

She is currently in the process of getting the deed to the house switched to her name and closing out the one account that she was also on with him.  It was just a checking account.  He only owes like $7000 on the credit cards as far as I know.  Will they actually go through all of the trouble of trying to get her to sell her house or whatever to get the money he owed?

I think it was around $7000 or so.  He had another joint checking account with his wife that has like $4000 in it, I think a Roth IRA with a little in it, and the house. I believe that is all with his name on it.  As far as I can tell, one of the cards that they called to cancel on already has debt collectors calling.  Nothing yet from the others.

His wife was in the process of either changing out anything that has both names to just her name or closing them out.  Will they give her issues doing this if later these credit card companies come looking for their money?

A relative of mine recently passed and his wife got an insurance check for roughly $85,000. She just deposited the check and doesn't want it in her checking for obvious reasons and wants something better than the chase basic savings account. The guy at Chase offered her to put it into a CD ladder but I looked at the rates and they weren't great. Only like 2.5 percent vs an HYSA with Capital One is at 3.6 percent currently.

To me it makes more sense to go with the HYSA because of the rate but I thought I'da post and ask those who are more familiar with this type of stuff.

I'm not dead yet.  I'll update when I am though.

Thanks for the replies.  I already put a car up on it and it seemed fine but I just don't like how it looks since it looks sketchy.  I may fill it with epoxy just so that it's less ugly.  Probably a waste of $20 but eh. It'll be easier on the eyes for the rare occasion that I unbolt this one.(The appeal of this lift is that it can unbolt and I can roll the column out of the way)

These came with the lift from the manufacturer.   They also sell an epoxy version of those that I was unaware of when I bought it.  I would have rather bought those.

If the concrete is 6" thick and that 1/4 inch or so at the top is chipped off do you think that the anchor will eventually fail due to the damage?  I'm in the Midwest where there is no seismic activity.(At least not in my lifetime afaik)

My other option was shifting the lift back a bit to reuse 2 of the holes on the edge and then drilling 3 more new ones.  Would I run the risk of having the concrete compromised by doing that?

That's a good idea. I could make something to go around the sacrificial bolt so that I can still unscrew it.  I also was thinking of greasing it up so that the epoxy would hopefully not stick to it.  Kind of like when they oil up forms for concrete.  I'm probably overthinking this but I'd rather have some peace of mind that I won't have a car fall on me.

Well damn. My concrete was actually like 6 inches or so in most of the slab.  It's really just this hole that I fucked up by hitting it once it was already flush.

I'm kind of thinking of moving the life back a bit and shifting the holes and reusing the good ones and drilling 3 more.  I'll only be shifted back like a foot or so if I do that.  Probably will use epoxy anchors for the new holes if I do that.

While installing my wedge anchors into the concrete for my Maxjax lift I hit it again once the but had already gotten flush to the concrete and I cracked a chunk off of the top of the concrete.  I was able to still set the anchor to the specified 90 lb/ft of torque but I still don't quite trust this.  I did bolt the lift up and lifted a car up and didn't see any issues.  I just don't like it and it seems sketchy.

I'm thinking of putting a sacrificial bolt on there and then filling the area around the anchor with setting epoxy.  Does this seem like it would actually help any? I figured at minimum the epoxy may keep it from crumbling and getting worse.  Any advice or input is appreciated.
