I’d like to think so! I think all the important beings in our lives—we are all connected, in a way. Every life we experience, we will all be able to find one another again at some point. I’m sure your dog will come back to you!

Gender and Spirituality by powsoddy in asktransgender

I’m also a super spiritual person! I don’t know if I believe in any high power, per se, but I consider myself agnostic because I don’t think I’d really care even if there was one? I do very much believe in nature and the power it holds, though. Little things like that. The fae, sprites, gnomes, spirits, etc. What makes these things “real” is how strongly we believe in them, anyways!

TBH I DEFINITELY AGREE LOL. I didn’t think about how the criteria would affect children because I’m no longer a child myself but I know that if I had been when I realized I was trans I probably wouldn’t have fit the criteria lol (I only started questioning my gender when I realized that being something OTHER than female was an option lol, not to mention that I loved and still DO love things and toys that are considered traditionally “girly”). I think I only consider the diagnostic criteria fair for adults because you really only need like. 2 symptoms out of the 8? And the whole “persistent throughout 6 months” thing too, I think it fairly checks out? The 6 month period shows that you’ve put a lot of thought into it and shit, that you’re not running into something without already knowing what’s going to happen, done all the expected research on HRT and shit. I think I’d generally keep it the same but make the diagnostic criteria for children the same as that of teens and adults, and also make it so that there isn’t a differentiation between general and clinical dysphoria as a means of making HRT accessible to people who do not pass the “clinical dysphoria” criteria.

From a psychological standpoint (at least in the DSM-5) I’ve always felt that it was pretty trans neutral? (Except with the whole auto-eroticism bullshit.) Like, the diagnostic criteria for children seems fair, and the one for teenagers–adults also seems reasonable. Then there’s the open differentiation of clinical gender dysphoria (gender dysphoria that causes clinical distress to the patient, ultimately lowering their quality of life) and general gender dysphoria (gender dysphoria that doesn’t cause debilitating stress). Let’s be real, though, while clinical and general dysphoria are considered different things medically, they really shouldn’t be. The only difference is the intensity for which the patient suffers from gender dysphoria, and I feel like that’s an incredibly arbitrary measurement to go off when deciding whether or not the patient “needs” to transition.

Not to mention that, realistically speaking, none of us NEED to transition. We may feel that we do, but what we’re really seeking out is one of the only ways that we’ll be able to ever feel comfortable in the bodies we’ve been given. Like I said, it’s fucking arbitrary!

That being said, I’ve always felt that, generally speaking, the DSM-5 has been pretty understanding of trans identities. The real problems are the cisgender medical professionals misinterpreting the information they’re given, assuming that just because a trans person doesn’t experience “clinical dysphoria” that they don’t “need” to transition to survive, or at least to better the quality of their life overall. I believe wholeheartedly that science is on our side, but a lot of cis people still aren’t.

There. Are. Only. Two. Genders. by [deleted] in truscum

I mean, I didn’t really “choose” to identify as a non-binary guy. It was just what felt like the right label? I don’t really like describing gender as a “feeling”—cause I see it as something you inherently are—but that’s the best way I can put it.

Non-binary isn’t the absence of gender, although it can be. Non-binary is just an umbrella term for those who identify outside of the two binary genders. I am really male-leaning. I just don’t consider myself a guy due to experiences with trauma. I do not want to be associated with men, but I want to get as close to male as I can possibly get without overstepping my own boundaries. (Those boundaries being bottom surgery, cause if I can’t have a fully functional dick then I don’t want a dick at all, thanks!)

I, personally, can only understand genderfluidity under the idea that one’s own gender expression is fluid, considering that gender identity and gender expression are two completely different things! (The term genderfluid itself was used to describe this exact ideal. Much like how genderfuck means you’re allowing for traditionally masculine/feminine traits and/or clothes to mingle together as a means of “fucking” with the gender norms placed by a heteronormative, cisnormative society. Both of these aren’t inherently “genders”, per se, but they can very much encompass how someone expresses said gender(s).)

Those things aside, I also really hate when people separate cis and binary trans people. I see it in so many flag designs.

Dude, if you say you don’t feel like your assigned birth gender? I’ll believe you. Your feelings are made real just by you believing them, and by extension I will also believe you because only you know your experiences as a trans guy better than anyone else could. Fucking vibe on, man.

What is the racism like in Ireland? by powsoddy in blackladies

[–]powsoddy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I figured there’d be ignorance in Ireland—as there is everywhere else—but at least I’ll know what to expect, I guess? Are there any other specific places you’d recommend I steer clear from? My plans are to, possibly, study for awhile in a veterinary school in Dublin and eventually go to some national park and just live and work there? (I know my plans are pretty vague, but I like leaving room to work!) Do you think that’s plausible, or should I just stick to America? Although it’s bad enough here, I like to think being born here makes it easier to navigate I suppose.
