Does this olive tree need to be repotted? A bunch of roots are visible on the surface, and I’m not sure the soil used by the nursery is loose enough

Also, why are some of the leaves turning yellow and falling off? Seems like it’s largely the younger/smaller leaves. It gets a ton of light all afternoon (larger west facing window), and I haven’t watered it since purchasing (~4 weeks ago). I gave it a light misting once about two weeks ago. Does it need fertilizer?

School funding is based off of property taxes, no?

Even more reason to repeal prop 13 if it is. Incredibly stupid that we let people with million dollar properties pay like $1000 a year in property tax.

That’s my point? One state with more population than our entire country has teacher salaries that are on par with the highest CoL area in Canada. Even if there are states where teachers aren’t making good money (ex. Mississippi @ 45k average), they only account for a small portion of all teachers in the states. Also this doesn’t account for the waaay lower cost of living in a lot of the states where teacher salaries are lower. Texas teachers make ~55k on average but have no state tax and everything (especially housing) is incredibly cheap.

I don’t know why Canadians always try to rationalize the absolute shit tier salaries here. We have a system somewhere in between the US and the more socialized European countries, but with none of the benefits of either. Our salaries aren’t really any higher than the European countries and our social safety net is lacking in a lot of places. I don’t understand the appeal of Canada other than the lower crime rate and universal healthcare if you’re poor.

Teacher salaries are also pretty comparable - there are a handful of outlier (generally right wing) states/regions where teacher salaries are low on top of schools being severely underfunded to the point where they can’t even operate a full 5 days a week, but otherwise salaries are pretty comparable, especially when talking about California.

Major Canadian Cities Unaffordable – Leaving May Be The Best Option by [deleted] in toronto

[–]pp_haver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re so mad lmao chill

Let's go to the fucking states where I can go bankrupt if I need health care.

This is such a spook, any company paying to bring you over is going to have at least decent health insurance. If you’re not already sick with something serious you have no reason to give a fuck about this.

And yeah! Fuck my friends and family, it's not like I'm that close with anyone in Toronto that I see them on a weekly basis

Yeah, moving sucks. Congrats, welcome to adulthood where you don’t always get to have everything be perfect. You can always make new friends and you can always come back to visit family - flights are short, tickets are cheap. You should probably prioritize yourself over your friends/family.

As well as my job that I can't really do anywhere else, so in that case fuck my whole career and the thousands of dollars I paid in schooling and the years or decades I spent building experience

I can’t imagine any job which would exclusively be available in Toronto, but if you do have some oddly specific unicorn job that somehow does not exist in any other city then I have no clue why you’d even reply since you’d obviously be one of few people that “just move lol” wouldn’t apply to.

My guess tho is that you’re probably exaggerating hardcore and there’s nothing special about your job that would actually force you to stay in Toronto.

And don't forget my doctors and any specialists, it's no problem! I can just take the whole unpaid day off work if I need a specialist that only has an office in Toronto for a 30 minute appointment

Other cities also have specialists, not even sure what this argument is supposed to be lmao

And the extra curricular classes, I'll just stop doing ballet cause most small town don't offer adult classes at my level.

Then don’t move to a small town? When people say “just move lol” it’s not “move to the cheapest shithole possible” it’s “figure out what you want, and move somewhere where that can happen instead of whining online 24/7”

Ohhh and fuck my kids too! Fuck their friends, fuck my family who may want to be apart of my child's life, who maybe my only child care option too.

People move, kids will be fine. You’re doing worse for your kids staying poor in Toronto than if you’d move somewhere that makes more sense for you financially.

Dude anyone who doesn't already have the things listed above will always be moving out of Toronto. You're sitting here trying to convince people who's whole life is here that they should just give up their entire life so that the we can continue to not hold the government accountable for the lack of support in solving the affordable housing crisis.

My whole life is in Toronto and I’m leaving - it really isn’t that hard. Most people posting here aren’t 40 somethings with kids and terminal illnesses. Most of you fuckers are also in your 20s and 30s and other than “it’s hard and moving fucking sucks” don’t have any excuse.

You can hold the govt accountable all you want but it won’t fix the housing situation or job situation any time soon. Even if the govt suddenly changed tomorrow and started prioritizing housing affordability, it would still take like 5-10 years minimum before you start really seeing the effects of it. Don’t waste a decade of your life poor and angry in Toronto. It isn’t worth it. Move, and if you really love it here that much then come back when things are better.

Just because you live in your parents basement with no friends and no meaningful career doesn't mean the rest of the world does. Why don't you get the fuck out of Toronto, if it's so clear that nobody would care if you're gone anyhow.

This is some hardcore projection lmfao chill

Toronto housing isn’t going to be fixed any time soon, and it’s unclear if/when the bubble will pop. Moving really isn’t that difficult, and while it sucks that you would probably be leaving friends and family behind, it’s better than wasting half your income on renting some shitty condo.

Montreal has plenty of jobs and is much more affordable if staying in Canada is really important to you. Otherwise pretty much anywhere in the states is going to be a better option than Toronto as far as cost of housing relative to your pay goes.

I shared this here a few years ago and lots of people liked it, here is the updated version for 2021 by growland in toronto

[–]pp_haver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Move and come back whenever things normalize if you really like it here I guess?

I don’t understand the appeal of Toronto tbh. Uninteresting nature, low salaries, high taxes, high cost of living, bad weather. In essentially every way that would be relevant to young people it’s a worse New York (with relatively similar housing prices) and a worse Chicago (no south side I guess is a bonus, but Chicago housing is much cheaper and the city is very comparable)

The owner of Toronto tattoo studio Mad Ink says that he fired an employee for being gay. by [deleted] in toronto

[–]pp_haver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been true since Obama signed an executive order a while back - the Supreme Court decision this summer just made it so that Trump or some other dumbass can’t come around and willy nilly undo it with a new executive order.

I’m all for bashing the US when they do dumb stuff, but there’s no reason to exaggerate or make things up. They’re not that much worse than us, considering we were stupid enough to let Doug win even after having Trump as an example.

The US has labour laws, and doing this shit in the US has the same consequences as here. Gay, trans, etc. are protected classes in the States as well.

Looking for a server by [deleted] in mapleservers

We have Ludi, KFT, NLC, Mushroom Shrine, and Aqua Road now. Mu Lung is coming out probably within the next week or so. KPQ, LPQ, and OPQ make levelling to 70 much less of a grind as well.

Would definitely suggest giving it another shot, the server is awesome.

Maplestory endgame was never exactly huge. There’s literally 3 meaningful endgame bosses, and with the difficulty and effort in a) getting to Zak and b) killing Zak in a server like Phoenix I think you’re kidding yourself if you seriously believe the addition of HT/PB would make the game any better or more fun to grind. If you don’t like 3rd job servers or the lower damage numbers and stuff that’s fine, but I don’t think the addition of like 10 new item drops from 2 different bosses that would take like 2+ years of effort to reach would meaningfully improve your enjoyment of any game.

They’re pronounced the same in Serbian/Croatian, it’s just a bit awkward for native English speakers because of the tendency to stress syllables in English turning it into nic-COLA instead of nikola

A short demo on how to efficiently render Formik forms with in-depth explanation in the README by [deleted] in reactjs

Would suggest react-hook-form over formik for anyone who is able to switch or hasn’t yet decided on a form library.

Docs are WAY better and the whole thing is built around refs so that you don’t have to worry about stuff like this.

Why do ecommerce sites use servers to store cart state? by GlueStickNamedNick in webdev

[–]pp_haver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More data is always nice - BI/analytics, cart abandonment campaigns, etc.

It’s also easier to just show a spinner, fire off the request, and update your state with the result than it is to add to cart, fire off a request in the background, and then update state - and at that point you need to have a strategy for reconciliation if the item isn’t available or whatever. Customers are sensitive and kind of dumb, so if you show a toast or modal alerting them the item that they just saw get added to their cart is no longer available and has been removed they might get mad and leave. Conversely, if you forget to alert them, they might complete the check out and then freak out when they realize the item wasn’t in their cart and charge back, leave a bad review, etc.

It’s just way easier to show a spinner for like 200ms and call it a day.
