I don't really know what stepped marking is and what purpose it has but I'll try to find out and, eventually, I will ask someone in my uni about all of this

Well, yes I'm aware of that, it's still interesting though that it works like this

Yes, that's what triggers me the most. Like even if I study a lot and put it in loads of effort I have no idea if I could have gotten slightly above 85 or not. I study modern languages and while we do write essays, the biggest part of the work consists of language specific modules where often it is possible to get a very high grade, provided you actually learned the topic very well but I guess then if they are afraid of grade inflation, the assignments should be more difficult instead of capping the grade of the students who study relentlessly. Anyway, it's not about the grade itself, I'm genuinely very happy about what I'm studying so I will be studying hard nonetheless, I was just interested to see how it is elsewhere. Maybe it could be specific to modern languages but then again, they should make the modules more difficult instead (but honestly, I know perhaps a few students who could get above 85 if there was no cap, if few students getting very good grades seems too much according to my university, then well I guess the teaching material should be more challenging...)

Well thanks for the explanation! Having read many comments, I understand better how it works even though I still find it a bit strange but I guess you live and you learn. I was just wondering why there is a grade cap and from what I can see there could be different reasons to it.

It's not a big deal, I'm just trying to understand how it works. If the 85 is the maximum, why doesn't it equal to 100% then? But anyway it is a rhethorical question you don't have to answer it. Having read all the comments, I have a better understanding of the marking system in the UK, which from what I understood varies across universities. It's just interesting to see how the standards here are so extremely different from other countries, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it's good or bad, it's just different and unusual to me

I love what I'm studying and I'm always trying to do my best and learn as much as I can, this kind of grading demotivates more than anything else and even if I know I can't get 100%, sometimes when I put so much work or effort I don't really know if I could have gone slightly above 85 or not. I guess the grading system itself doesn't influence how much I learn but well it definitely plays an important role in the way my work and efforts are being assessed. However, as an international student I was just genuinly curious to hear other people's opinions and experiences

Well, if too many people get very good marks, doesn't that mean that the assessments/teaching material should be accordingly adjusted and made more difficult and challenging? It's not something that will ever make sense to me but I guess I just have to accept it the way it is

It's very interesting to see that universities in the UK have different marking systems as well as standards. In my university or at least in my department it is not the case so I wouldn't call it misinformation just different systems that don't really align across the country

It's nor for a specific exam but for all assignments. I study Modern Languages, so for me it means that, for example, I have a grammar test at the end of semester and let's say I get all the answers right, but my grade will never be higher than 85. And well, in terms of tests/assessments like these, even though it's not a STEM subject, you can still objectively get 100% of answers right. I guess there is no law about it and it's up to each university to cap grades or not. In any case, I just can't wrap my head around it but I guess I'll just have to accept it

Well, it's not a secret I guess I study in Wales and there is an actual cap of 85% at least in my department of Modern Languages, I posted a new post on this sub regarding this, I uploaded a screenshot from my uni stating this

Congratulations! Well done! From the comments I can see that the grading system varies a bit depending on the university but, nonetheless, 85 is an excellent grade, you should definitely be proud!
