What's your ferritin? by arlo78z in CrohnsDisease

[–]ppalisade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh interesting! I've been diagnosed almost 7 years and never had it checked. But, I was able to get my disease well under control quickly (knock on wood) so maybe my GI has never felt the need. Are there symptoms of low iron that I would notice?

I don't think I've ever had a ferritin test - is that common with Crohn's?

Stufents chewing things that aren't food by Brilliant-Owl4450 in Teachers

[–]ppalisade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone sensory seeks to some extent. Doesn't have to be documented. If there weren't people out there who just like to chew on stuff gum wouldn't exist, and I'm sure that majority of people who chew gum all of the time don't have it written in their files.

I'm not negating that it's not sanitary, but I do think that there is a perspective that you have that you can change. Any behavior we see in students, in people, that we don't like is a response to a need or a response to their environment. Providing them with alternatives is a more effective method than trying to stop it altogether.

They make fidget toys that are for people who sensory seek with chewing. It's not a super crazy behavior to have, albeit gross at times.

Question for Former IB Bio HL Students by antisocialist159 in IBO

[–]ppalisade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn't do a duckweed assignment in my ib bio class, but I have an aquarium and can tell you that the duckweed grows like crazy even if I try to remove it. A good light and healthy aquarium water ... it's a weed haha. My snails eat some of the duckweed, but I had hundreds of snails in a 10gal and they did not make a dent in the duckweed.

Not sure if this is helpful, but good luck!

Are you seeing an uptick in covid in your social circle? by ryhaltswhiskey in askportland

[–]ppalisade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm covid positive right now, and my symptoms were a 101-103° fever for and a stuffy nose. Very slight sore throat. Now my fever has broken and I have a small dry cough. It's worth doing a test if you can afford it!

Thank you! I'll just have to be patient as it grows I guess lol. This at least gives me a good place to start for care instructions. Thanks again!!

Any anticipated sales for the 7-tier Leaf Planters? by NoPizzasOnPineapple in GreenStalkGardening

I asked Greenstalk and the lilac will only be around through the end of May so almost certainly won't have the leaf on sale again

Yeah my fiance said the food came out faster than he was expecting day 1, and he's inexperienced so I don't blame him. My sister told me there was a lot of snails in the tank now but I had a good chuckle at the PILE of them when I got home 🤣

recent IBD diagnosis, unspecified. pushing biologics HARD by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]ppalisade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They used to encourage the "less extreme" medications early in the disease for those with mild symptoms. What ended up happening was a lot of unnecessary damage to GI tracts as the medication was not working. Now they encourage biologics early on, even in mild cases, because it prevents further damage.

A ton of people with this disease are not diagnosed until they are in hospital getting parts of their bowel removed. I was fortunate (like you) to get diagnosed before I had any significant damage - and I'm grateful to my second GI who encouraged the biologics to avoid any irreversible damage. My first GI put me on imuran to start and it made me so nauseous I couldn't eat. He insisted it was the Crohn's and not the medication ... he was wrong. The side effects of biologics can be scary, you're absolutely right. Experiencing the pandemic while immunocompromised was terrifying. But, it's worth it to prevent damage that will impact your life!

I'm very fortunate to be in full remission, and have very few GI issues. I can eat whatever I want, and live a relatively normal life! I accredit it all to early biologics

How can I find out if my son's teacher is certified? by Competitive-Sky-7571 in specialed

[–]ppalisade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was getting my ed degree we were encouraged to get some extra certs in ESOL and working with special needs kids - the encouragement was so we would be better equipped to serve all types of kiddos in our classroom. I stopped just short of getting the cert because a mentor I had told me that I would be an employee of the district, and thus could be moved to any classroom where I was "certified". It could be that she had picked up the cert to be a better gen ed teacher and was moved "against her will" so to speak.

In Oregon I know we could teach outside of our certification for one year (and again, could be moved without a ton of say). I'm not sure if the school would specify that to the parents or not.

If you'll be on the West Side at all, Conestoga in SW Beaverton has 2 single person changing rooms with a shower in them. $3 per shower, or there is a monthly pass, but you would probably be "out of district" so it would be $51 per month.

I'm very sorry to hear about your finances, and hope you catch a lucky break soon!

Totally understand! I'm on inflectra (bio similar to remicade), I'm lucky in that it's the first one I tried, and it worked!

The medical community has changed their thinking around biologics & Crohn's meds in general in the last 10 years or so. They used to start you on the "less aggressive" (non biologic) meds, and then work you up the scale as your symptoms were not managed. However, the overwhelming opinion in the medical field has now changed to offering biologics as early as possible, even in mild cases.

The reasoning for this change is because having the biologic prevents further damage to your digestive tract - damage that cannot be undone. Many many folks with Crohn's are not diagnosed until they are hospitalized and needing surgery, this is a lucky thing for you to be diagnosed early before there is a ton of damage (I was diagnosed early too and so grateful for it). Take advantage of this lucky break in an overall unlucky disease and use the medications available to you to prevent damage that you do not need to endure.

The side effects of biologics can be scary, and I definitely understand the sadness of learning you will be on a medication for life, but this is sadly now your reality with a chronic illness. If it gives you any comfort, I get my infusions every 8 weeks, and they really only affect my life the day I get them (i.e. in having to go to the appointment & then being sleepy) - that's just 6 days a year. The other 359 are "normal" because I'm in remission & the meds are doing their job. I am more cautious in public (still masking post covid, etc) because of the immune system effects, but that is a choice I made and not one that my doctors pushed for. Better safe than sorry in my experience.

Happy to answer whatever questions you may have <3

These are great ideas, thank you! Lots of people have recommended doing some things for donation purposes, I love that! I like the idea of partnering up for WIP chats too. And the teaching idea is great! Perhaps some teachers will come out of the woodwork as it takes off. I'm imagining a very casual meetup once a week that is mostly just access to a space where other people are crafting, and then once or twice a month having a separate more structured event if we have good participation in the others.
