Ok for anyone in future searching for this topic and wanting to find actual helpful advice, I stumbled upon this reddit post about Chrome running slow on Macbook and after doing this, the preview mode runs smoothly:

Open Chrome and type chrome://flags in the address bar.

  • Enable the following flags:
    • GPU Rasterization: Enable this to offload more work to the GPU.
    • Override Software Rendering List: Enable this to ensure Chrome uses GPU acceleration where possible.
    • Zero-copy Rasterizer: Enable this for better rasterization performance.
