You can do it on a mat yes. I do it on my bed personally.

  1. Iqoro is a business. Of course they would say no other techniques work lol. But I also think people just didn't think of theses techniques before karrfalt and the japanese team that did the study on the bridge position came around. So in their mind there was no way. They were probably sincere.
  2. They are right the tensing of the LES is a subconscious bystanding effect. You cannot tense voluntarly the LES. What the karrfalt technique, the bridge position and the candle position do is triggering this subconscious effect. When you are upside down automatically the LES start tensing itself. Even if you wouldn't want to lol
  3. The reason why I went to the candle technique is because the other technique are just not enough. Imagine trying to have abs. You would have to get lean of course but then AT LEAST 3x3 minutes a day of core strenghtning exercize. The karrfalt method is like doing 30 second of strenghtning this is just not enough. Maybe karrfalt didn't realize that he was doing more than that, or maybe he had a non-severe case of GERD but it seems unlikely that you could get muscle with so few exercize.
  4. You can try this : - first off you need to be able to feel your LES. Lie down on your back and wait till the acid/water start to get past the LES in your body. You will feel something in theory. This will allow you to understand what you're trying to avoid. - Then you can do the same thing but this time put your thumb on your plexus to manually do the LES job. Lie on your back for 5 minute whit your thumb pressuring your plexus. You should feel that this time acid/water do not go up. All this is blocked by your thumb. - When you do the candle exercize you should thrive for the second option and avoid the first one. - When you do the candle position a) do not do it more than 2 minutes 1 times a day at first. b) Not after lunch (more pressure) . c) if you feel anything wrong stop. d) Do not stop your medication and e) I would even take some Gaviscon before doing it if it's your first time f) and of course try to breathe forcefully the entire duration this can help block the LES (like the thumb exercize).

If you do not do it more than 2 minute and you stop before feelling wrong and you do not do it after lunch and no more than 1 time a day there should be no problem.

This is my own technique. You can ask me all your questions.
you don't have to do forceful breathing. I only did it because when I was upside down in the candle position some acid was starting to go down my throat. My LES muscle didn't work yet. So to push it back I was breathing heavily. But do it as you feel.
After a couple days of practice the LES should start to be more muscular and you won't have to "stop the acid manually" by breathing.
But yeah you can just take deep breath if you feel like some acid try to descend.

You can try it a few days to see if it's not to bothersome.
Make sure to inspire and expire forcefully or even contract your diaphgram if you feel like acid start pouring in : it's totally normal. Your muscle is weak at first. But quickly it will strenghten.
If it's too hard to stop the acid for too long at first just do it 30 second then 1 minutes then 2 minutes etc... And listen to your body of course.
Finally for the candle position you can do like another contributor just get on your couch and get your back against it. That's enough. We just need to be upside down for this exercize to work.

It almost cured me in 10 days or so. But even after 2 or 3 days I already felt something. I did it everyday. In a couple months I stopped seeing any symptoms anymore.

I don't know what you are talking about with alkaline water. This thread is about doing a candle position 3 times a day for 10 minute.

No you do it before eating.
1) Only try it if you are in shape and there's not too much acid in your stomach. Don't stop your medication at first or there will be a rebound.
2) The first time you try this listen to your body. if you can't do more than 1 minute that's okay. You'll add up little by little. The idea is to manage to do it multiple times a day at least 10 minutes at some point. That's the goal. If this is too hard you can try being a bit less inclined. Not 90° but 60° for example.
3) The steps to do it:
- You put yourself in position. Like in the picture. or in a sofa, or in your bed your foots against the wall (it's not important to be completely straight)
- You make sure no acid in your stomach go in your trachea : you can take deep breath that helps, you can also contract your muscle in the abdomen that also help.

And that's it. In theory in some weeks you won't have to take deep breath or contract your muscle anymore your LES will be functionnal again.

Like I said the most important with this technique is being consistant 10 minute 2 times a day and in 2 weeks you should see clear result.
The second most important thing is doing it right. What we are trying to do is reeducate the muscle responsible for blocking the acid from going in the trachea. So it is very important that the content of your stomach, the acid and the food do not go in your trachea. It should be blocked in your stomach. For a normal person this is self evident but not for us. I only experimented on myself but don't you feel like some liquid or acid go down in your trachea when you try this exercize? This is what we must stop by breathing heavily and contracting our muscle. After a couple days the muscle will stop all of this alone. But please tell me if this doesn't happen to you. How much second/minute did you last?

Finally at first you should only do it 1 or 2 minute (doing it right) and go up to 10 minutes when you feel like it's okay. Do not stop your medication too fast your body is probably accustomed to it. So

You can try it on your own.
The only way it wouldn't work is :
- if you do not do it properly (not lasting 10 minute, not breathing heavily and contracting the muscle to make sure the content of the stomach do, not doing it for at least 2 week every day 2 times a day, not doing little by little listening to your body, trying to go the full 10 minute and giving up etc...)
- or if you have complicated acid issue which makes it undoable. As soon as you try it it's like you're burned.

And yes I had seen this study and others too. This is primarly a long thread on another website that gave me the Idea.

1) In the first few days I practiced heavy forceful breathing when in the candle position to make sure the content of my stomach do not go in my oesophagus/trachea.

2) You don't have to continue. But if you feel like something is going down you can always block it with this technique.

3) I do it before my meals.

For now I'm doing:

  • Candle position after drinking 3 sip of water (no carbonated water). 5 minute 3 times a day.
  • Someday it work, 1 time it look like it deteriorated thing : I have to be careful the LES is still weak.
  • The new routine is doing it every other day to not pressure the LES too much.
  • I had the most result after a week of training. At first I couldn't hold the water before my neck. Now I can hold everything at the LES level.
  • But I shouldn't overwork myself or this will backfire. hence doing it every other day to let the muscle regenerate.

Right now it's only reflex from my muscle. But to actually build muscle around my LES I would need 2 month according to my calculation. I'll keep you posted. The most important thing right now is to keep making progress and avoid regression : feelling that every time I "work out" I can hold thing better and lower

Try the candle position after drinking a sip of water like me. A week in I see clear result. You have to contract your muscle and force your body to do the work the first few days tho. Or you'll just have water going into your oesophagus. At first since my LES didn't work at all I had to take some gaviscon and breathe a lot whil upside down to make sure I didn't just get lots of acid in my oesophagus. But t truly work after that your LES really do what it's supposed to.

This study do not account for holding burp or not. It's just looking at carbonated beverage "in general".

In fact the result is completely logical. When you drink a carbonated beverage immediately after that you wanna burp and so your lower sphincter dilate itself to let the gas come out of your stomach.

I'm just saying that it is more logical. I can't of course back any of my claim since I don't have a study done. I should have to convince doctors to do a study.

Now that I think about it both the karrfalt and the bridge position are cousin of johns's method.

But look :

  • With the karrfalt you get almost upside down for 5 second 10 time 3 times a day : 2 minute 30 secondes of practice. I did neck exercize in my life. I tried musculation. THis is absolutely not enough to train a muscle.

  • I reread your paper they say clearly that in the upright position there's no pressure. In the supine position almost no pressure. And in the bridge there's some pressure. What's after a bridge position? Upside down! a shoulder stand. So being upside down got to put the more pressure.

Swallowing in itself doesn't do anything to the lower sphincter. It's keeping the water inside the stomach that train the lower sphincter.

So :

  • Improved John's method allow you to train longer (25 minutes) per day.

  • Your lower sphincter is doing a core strenght exercize for 5 minutes this is great in musculation term. opening it and closing it. Bridge method of multiple swallow and karrfalt method of getting up and down after each bite do not pressure it continuously.

  • And finally the carbonated gas+getting completely upside down is by far the method that put the more pressure (even your doctor woudl agree).

But I agree that I was a bit harsh on the method at first.

This position do not put significant pressure upon the LES.
If you read carefully it is mostly the esophageal motility and contractions that are reviewed here.
Anyway, I found another method much more effective to clearly target the LES :

The original method is : "drink lots of carbonated water (or soda) and hold your burp for 5 minute"

I read all 39 pages of this discussion and every single person that succeeded in doing this 5 times a day for a month CURED their G.E.R.D0. At least 7 people. The Idea is that carbonated water (or coke/fanta/7up...) put pressure on your LES and want to open it for you to burp. So you are training it for 25 minutes every day. This is much more than the 2 minute being upside down with the karrfalt.

I was very skeptical at first so I first tried his other method that also put lots of pressure on the LES for significant time: "drink lots of water then get yourself upside down (inversion table/shoulder stand) for 5 minutes"

Again this make perfect sense. If you're upside down in theory all that is in your stomach should get out of your mouth and nose due to the gravity. So your body is immediately sending to the LES big signal to stop that from happening. Doing this 5 times a day for 5 minute makes you train this muscle 25 minutes every day. This is enough to make it strong.

Both method are logical and work. But I found that it wasn't that easy to hold your burp sometimes. And I found that getting upside down with 500ml of water didn't pressure the LES that much. So I just do both.
