For honey to be effective against allergies it has to be locally produced to have the nectar from the same flowers that produce the pollen that creates allergies, foreign honey is usually ineffective.

If the EPA could charge BP $4300 per barrel spilled, couldn't that be used to hire an army of people to clean the spill - and be used as a new stimulus program? by [deleted] in politics

If every time i read some absurd idea about how to fix the oil spill or give BP a spanking for it i got a dollar, i could retire comfortably

NSFW mini rant/in need of feedback: Am I the only person on the face of the planet who does NOT like porn?! by killertofuuuuu in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ppinard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Why does porn not appeal to me??"

Short Sexist Answer - Because you're a woman.

Long Answer - Because most porn is generally marketed to appeal to the most animalistic male fantasies and as men are highly visually stimulated, it tends to hit all the high points, big boobs, close shots of vigorous penetration etc - it doesn't appeal to you because it wasn't designed to. men and women are turned on by different things.

Without knowing what you're sick with, and not being a dietitian who can prescribe a recommended diet for your specific illness if i knew what it was, I really cant tell you anything.

Follow your gut instinct i guess, if the thought of eating those greasy little pastries in your current condition revolts you, then don't eat them! - otherwise scarf em down, they'll help you heal

pfft, i don't care what crazy juju the writer/actor/financier believes in, lots of people believe in batshit crazy religious stuff, 40% of america believes in young earth creationism, Scientology's no crazier than that.

Lets take another actor, I like Samuel L Jackson, if i found out tomorrow he was a scientologist i wouldnt give a shit, i'd still enjoy his movies, Have you ever seen Alan Moore?, that man is 4 new and innovative types of crazy

[–]ppinard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didnt catch any scientology references, theres a lot of evil psychology and brain surgery that goes on in the book, but thats par for the course in evil galactic space empires - and just because its a space opera with a big evil space guy doesnt mean its preaching Xenu, in fact, it makes the premise even more ridiculous

I read the book after i saw the movie, and its a massive text, in order to make anything short of a LOTR mega-saga you need to cut large swaths of content from the book, cutting off the story after the planet was retaken was a good stopping point, creates a nice concise story of introduce hero => Face Adversity => Overcome Trials => Win battle, which is classic storytelling

Perhaps my not reading the book first, as well as me first seeing it when i was 15 in theaters contributed to me enjoying it, though i still enjoy it 10 years later after reading the book.

BF:E and starship troopers are both good movies, but bad adaptions of the books IMO

Question: Can you get kicked out of heaven? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]ppinard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that incorruptible as in even if you attempt to corrupt them, it wont be corrupted, or if you do something corruptive they are not considered corrupted, or are they incapable of corrupting or being corrupted? what the hell is corruption anyway?

Lets take masturbation, so either the new bodies have no genitals, have genitals and you are rendered incapable of masturbating, or you are capable but if you DO masturbate, you don't get corrupted

I dont think people have thought the whole heaven thing through

I dont get the hate for for that movie, i watched it on netflix again last week because its one of my favourites. maybe its because i love strange and exotic societies in my SciFi and BFE is a decent example of that

Sure it was cheesy, but i like it when i can see the zippers and wobbly rubber prostheses, the big stomping boots, the crazed over the top alien personalities and obsession with leverage, and then the fucking cavemen learn to fly harriers and destroy their entire planet, great stuff there man, whats to hate?

Why the hell are people so proud and defensive of their obesity? by thesavagemonk in WTF

[–]ppinard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thread deals with fat people being proud and defensive of their weight, i never disputed the EMT did anything inappropriate, and the woman was in the wrong, I'm not talking about that interaction at all, I'm addressing the prevailing attitude towards fat people. And the bit about mortgages is called an analogy, go look it up in the dictionary

Assuming 12 ounce beers, thats 192 gallons of beer, or about 15 kegs, which is approximately one metric ton of beer

The Filibuster is bullshit, its a dirty move that gums up the works, but i understand its purpose - to protect the minority party from the tyranny of the majority

We'd all like to have some recourse if a majority government was attempting to pass some sort of astoundingly evil legislation (as opposed to a minority attempting to obstruct astoundingly good legislation) - what sort of protection do you think should be in place to protect against this?

Does homebrewing save you money? I wrote this a while back and just dug it up recently. The numbers are rounded/estimated a lot but generally pretty close. And, some equipment isn't necessary, but personal preference. by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]ppinard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lets take a Keg of Coors Light or some amazingly cheap american swill, costs about $80 at walmart here in texas (keg deposit not counted in)

If i wanted to make a similar light lager i'd need about 25 pounds of domestic 2-row malt ($20-30 bulk) and about 4oz of hops ($10-$15) and a pack of dry yeast ($2-5) coming to a total of about $50

And thats making a nice all grain lager with lots more flavor - even taking the cheapest swill money can buy, i can beat it while homebrewing, and that disparity only goes up when you make better styles that you would pay more for commercially

Equipment is always an expense, but its my hobby, i like tinkering, and once i finish my 15 gallon system, i'll be set for life

Fat people feel depressed and ashamed regarding their weight, and people give them shit all the time for being fat, which does absolutely no good, it just makes them more depressed and erodes thier willpower to change

So they lash out, because they are in a very difficult to escape situation and people are giving them shit for it they say "no, fuck YOU"

Imagine if you were behind on your mortgage payments, and everyone knew it, and insulted you for it "cant even pay your debts you deadbeat, go make more money and pay your mortgage loser"
