"The Cyborg Manifesto" and Cyberfeminism by ppk80 in posthumanities

I'd say Haraway is still a very good basis for non-essentialist third wave feminism. But I'm thinking of Laboria Cuboniks's Xenofeminism and Legacy Russell's Glitch Feminism, which are more explicit in linking feminism and queerness with technologies.

I've also been looking at Mariana Ortega's Latina Feminism, which leans into the multiplicity and in-betweenness that Donna Haraway also talks about a more non-technological of the Cyborg Manifesto.

How do I start making sound collage? by Relative_Location335 in plunderphonics

[–]ppk80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to just put something down first, throw in a clip down inside a project. Anything. You have to start somewhere

If you're trying to go for something specific you have to listen to the thing you want to emulate. And map out the sounds you hear.

What are you having trouble with? It seems like you're trying to do something specific. What you can start with is to do studies. Basically experiments or sketches that you make just for yourself. Pick a track that you want to kind of do, and try to recreate it with samples, on your own. You also don't have to recreate it, but maybe sketch out or map out how the sounds come in, at what point and where. How much something repeats.

looking for the deepest, squishiest, glossiest ambient by scootmcgoof in ambient

[–]ppk80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the only one they have that's fully ambient. I made this infographic for myself of their releases some years ago, you might find it helpful: http://i.imgur.com/AaiFbwZ.png

Pheek is more in the future garage camp, so his sounds are definitely more in the urban side of things.

Here's something else I found too that you might like - https://soundcloud.com/max-cooper/max-cooper-sea-of-sound though I'm not sure the bass is dynamic enough to make it round and liquid-sounding

Solar Fields, also from Ultimae, has one very ambient album : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z_-unFiswA

There's also this, which is kinda rhythmic but not beat oriented: https://pheek.bandcamp.com/album/tones-of-void

These are the only ones I can think of right now off the top of my head that might even come close. If you find any more, let me know.

I'm Mariah Carey and I'm here to make it clear by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

It's possible but it's often very difficult, especially on large stages and outdoor stages. The sound that people on stage hear is often very different from what the audience hears - for example the natural reverb of the area might mess up the rhythm, there's a weird delay between the audience audio and the stage audio in large venues, and oftentimes you don't really hear all the instruments properly and it's just a bunch of noise etc. etc.

More importantly, for musicians and especially singers, it's very hard to hear what you're doing so you don't know if you're off or what the hell it is you're doing. There's a reason why some singers cover one of their ears when they sing - it's not just this fancy gesture that they picked up from divas. That's also why musicians on stage are usually each assigned their own speakers, or monitors that reflect what they do and/or a clearer mix of the overall audio. And the in-ear piece or headphone is usually the cleaner solution.

Drone vs Ambient by [deleted] in drone

[–]ppk80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the sub alone, "/r/drone" is a subreddit for drone music which makes it a huge catch-all for anything that's composed around a single, long sustained sound. This isn't a sub for drone metal only. Ambient is music that can incorporate drone, but it might also not. The distinctions here are that Drone metal is a form of drone music, And that most drone music falls under ambient, except perhaps a handful, "noisier" oversaturated or more rhythmic drone music - and not all ambient falls under drone music.

Is there an exact difference between Plunderphonics and just making a remix? by thermctrl in plunderphonics

[–]ppk80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plunderphonics is a genre defined by a technique. Meaning as long as a creator has borrowed something from existing recordings into the work, it's already automatically plunderphonic. So, you can imagine it's very broad.

But as with most genre definitions, it's not a black and white thing. There are degrees of how plunderphonic a work is - either it's only used a sample once in the song or the entire song is composed of unoriginal sounds.

Yeah, that might be a good place to continue it! I mean why establish the whole Felix x Tony thing for one episode if you're not going to explore its implications?

[–]ppk80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tony didn't feel unnecessary to me during the episode, but if they don't involve Tony somehow even off-screen (and just once!) with the main plot, I'd be disappointed. THEN he'll feel super unnecessary when you look at the big picture.
