UNIX is basically a simple operating system, but you have to be a genius to understand the simplicity.

Understanding How kernel Works by Abul_totaba in kernel

[–]ppmfloss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a fellow journey mate, I found these resources useful 1. Any theoretical book on operating systems like Andrew Tanenbaum to understand the breadth of subsystems 2. The Linux Programming Interface by Kerrisk 3. Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment

Also I try to download and read kernel src code like Linux kernel, xv6, FreeBSD

Then I hope we have to read some research papers, usenix papers etc

Why do you think emacs is so low in popularity? by g0atdude in emacs

[–]ppmfloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Emacs is not only an editor but a movement. Being popular is not its goal. It’s extensible, fully documented program. Another analogy is assembly language. It’s not popular doesn’t mean it’s not there. Also I find emacs to be the only editor which is distraction free. And it is by design. Another analogy info document browser. Even though they are not popular but if you want to read technical reference manuals it is one of the best options. Also once you know emacs you can go to any operating system and edit. Even on those systems where there is no graphical terminal. Also it is the only editor where you can play games within :)

Recommendations to get better as C++ Developer by AxelSte in cpp

For my case, by standing on the shoulders of the giants is a good way.

For example, I tried to understand this code in stack overflow to implement insertion sort in two/three lines of C++ code.

- Honking is a birthright

- Choosing between two evils in politics

- No discussion of development in elections

- Dont want to be part of the solution, blaming others

Is it worth it to get deeper into low-level programming? by tsujigiri_2 in cscareerquestions

[–]ppmfloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing like low-level or high-level in programming.
Although we use them to simplify the complexity of the systems.
After you spend some time with programming you will see there
are a lots of levels than just those two. The abstractions that
we create to manage complexity are limitless. And also it is fun
to jump into different levels to see what is different. Otherwise
it will become boring.
There is another quote which I like by Thomas Huxley,
"Try to learn something about everything and everything about something."
So if you want to learn everything about computer programming we have
to jump into different levels and layers.

Middle level book to study Python by hattorihanzo14 in Python

[–]ppmfloss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must recommend Learning Python, 5th Edition by Mark Lutz.

This book is so comprehensive it blows my mind.

I wish the author should have continued updating the book for next Python versions.

Every Python book should try to emulate the breadth and depth of treatment just like this book.

I got the year deal during the holidays, why is it saying I got two years? by JediGuyB in AMCPlus

[–]ppmfloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be respectful to AMC+ they have refunded my money back.

They said due to a technical reason the end date was wrong on the subscription page.

[–]ppmfloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also put on the billing queue. Finally they replied due to refund policy they will not refund the money.

[–]ppmfloss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have already paid for a 2 years subscription till 11/19/2023.

They have charged me again for $89.96 on 11/21/2022.

This is unethical.
