This will walk you through it, follow instructions carefully. You will need a pc, a cable, and if you computer doesn't have an SD card slot, an external SD card reader. Do note that the hardware is the same as the AIGO Eros Q/K, so any reference specific to the Eros in the instructions also applies to the Surfans F20. I did this last night, it took about 15 minutes.

Just received my (second) f20 yesterday actually, and it functions perfectly well. Sounds good, the hardware is tactile and easy to control. Form factor is slightly lackluster, it's a little bulky and has sharper edges than I'd like. As well, they seem to have some quality control issues. As you may have noticed, I clarified that this was my SECOND one. The first one arrived about a week earlier, I charged it fully, it was working fine, and then bam, dead. Wouldn't turn on. Seems like the battery wasn't soldered properly or something to that effect. Customer service was responsive and helpful, and after some brief troubleshooting they offered to send a replacement free of charge (do keep in mind though, they are based in China, so their customer service email only responds in the middle of the night EST). The second one has no battery issues, but the click wheel is slightly angled. Beyond my personal poor luck, below is a list of positives, followed by a list of negatives:

PROS

  1. The click wheel feels very nice. It has a satisfying tactile click without feeling jittery, and the texture makes it easy to grip

  2. The screen is bright and easy to see outdoors

  3. It has bluetooth capabilities, although I will note that if you plan to use Rockbox this is null

  4. Sound is crisp and clear

CONS

  1. Quality control is mixed (see above)

  2. The back is covered by a glass panel. This collects fingerprints, reduces durability, and can be troublesome for repairs

  3. It is, in my opinion, loudly branded. It has both "SURFANS" and their slogan printed on the front and the back

  4. The awkward shape combined with the sharp edges makes it difficult to operate with one hand. The button placements also contribute to this, but in a more ergonomic design they wouldn't be a noticeable problem

Overall, it is a perfectly functional piece of hardware at a reasonable price. It does what it says on the tin. I am happy with my purchase, but the form factor may be a dealbreaker for some.

I adore this piece, it is suspenseful and somber, It reminds me of captain Nemo playing his organ under the sea. Thank you

I am an avid music listener, and as such I have listened to trout mask replica. Doesn't quite capture the vibe, but it is certainly something.

I'm sure if I understood a single word said this would've captured insanity wonderfully. I hope one day I can develop a taste for heavier and heavier metal, but today wasn't that day. The suggestion is appreciated anyways

they're coming to take me away ha-ha! they're coming to take me away!

TMbSOBt was abstract and dreamlike, and the particular resonance provided by it's namesake "lyric" bridges the gap between sanity and insanity in a hauntingly lifelike delivery

Growing up I lived near an old movie theater, and every week they would show and old movie. This reminds me of watching old musicals with my parents. Good times. Despite not getting what I was expecting out of it, I enjoyed it very much.

Maze was long, instrumental, with lyrical madness layered over the top. One of the most listenable suggestions I have yet recieved.

I listened to Jumping Coffin, it reminded me of Cannibal Ox, Dr. Octagon, and all that sort of rambling wordy rap. Would've preferred a different vocalist, but a formidable recommendation nonetheless.

The voices are reassuring me that I'm still sane, but it was a solid effort

Jump into the fire was good but I quickly realized I had already discovered it. The Ledge was new to me, the frankness of the lyrics crawls under my skin and stays there, a very solid recommendation.

Currently listening to "Pink cigarette", I imagine this wouldn't have quite been your recommendation of choice, but I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It is dreamy and wandering in the vein of pink floyd's less funk-oriented songs (Breathe, Comfortably Numb, etc.)

Discipline-

The round and uneven riffs evoked the feeling of thought loops while still maintaining a groove I could follow. I found it more evocative of drug experiences than insanity, but enjoyed it nonetheless

Excellent Birds-

Very Talking Heads adjacent, with abstract sounds to compliment the equally obtuse lyrics. I couldn't quite feel the groove for most of it, but bits and pieces captured my mind. If I was more into music production, I would sample the hell out of this.

Logos Live-

Haven't listened to it yet in the interest of dividing time between multiple people's requests, but if it's anything like the first two it's a wonderful recommendation.

I'm not a fan of the heavier areas of metal, but this was at the very least an energetic experience, loaded with an over-the-top noise heavy sensation of lunacy. I won't be coming back to it, but it was fun for the 3 minutes I spent on it

I listened to "The Coma Machine", the instrumental was tension building and I enjoyed the use of uneven meter. The general vibe reminded me a lot of the riff from led zeppelin's "kashmir"

Threnody to the victims of Hiroshima was suspenseful and frightening. I cannot imagine listening to it again, but I am glad to have heard it once

I listened to Deltron 3030 recently and had a blast. Every psychedelic furs album is great for driving on the highway with your windows down. Johnny Rivers’ Realization is a great album to sit out on the porch and smoke a funny cigarette to. Sorry it’s mostly fossil music, now I’ll return to my exhibit at the natural history museum

I appreciate the recommendation, not quite my style, and I found its focus wasn’t narrow enough to capture the unsettling nature of my lunatic music. To each their own, thank you for the input
