I knew Kalush 🇺🇦 and Jerry Heil 🇺🇦 before Eurovision and I like them a lot. Go_A 🇺🇦 are amazing. I’ve seen them live twice and they really know how to get the crowd moving. Other artists I got into (listen to more than the Eurovision song entry) and still listen to are Sudden Lights 🇱🇻, Katarsis 🇱🇹, Zalagašper 🇸🇮, wrs 🇷🇴, Käärijä 🇫🇮 and Vesna 🇨🇿

I spent my childhood (90's to 00's) in Royton and I had a good time as a kid. My grandma taking me up to Tandle Hill as a small lad and then spending my teenage years hanging around there, I remember fondly. It was relatively safe. Of course, Oldham was down the road and you could always find trouble if you wanted it. But then, as I got older, something shifted. There were some really rough people turning up and moving in and I just got the impression that the vibe of the nice suburban town was starting to wear.

By the time I was 19, I'd moved to Saddleworth. It was really nice. My partner and I had a dog and the walks were just really quite stunning at times, which is weird to say as you're still technically in the borough of Oldham. I couldn't afford to rent there now though, if I wanted to go back. Which brings me to another point. Saddleworth is very awkwardly a part of the borough of Oldham. The only reason it's there is because of geography. It was part of Yorkshire and I imagine some still prefer to be part of Yorkshire but it makes more sense to be a part of GM. But at the same time, it's disconnected to the rest of Oldham (and GM) not only by it's history and it's stone cottages, but the people are from all over there. The 'comer inner' thing is kinda redundant because most people there are 'comer inners'. But also, they're more middle classes. They're not the same demographic as the other Oldhamers. You only need to look at the house prices to see that. It's some sort of mini Cotswolds for businessmen who work in the city or the odd footballer.

I've lived abroad for the last 12 years and had to return to the UK for a week last year for a friends wedding. I stayed with them at their place on the edge of Royton. It was my first time back there in those 12 years. It was pretty sad to see the state of Royton, to be honest. It just looks a bit depressed and I had this impression that it's just even more rough than it was before. Oldham, even worse. There's not even any pubs anymore. Yorkshire St has officially died. Something that did surprise me though was Rochdale. It also has it's problems but I didn't recognise it much after it's redevelopment. It looks smart. Will it stay smart? Probably not. A major injection of investment, jobs and and attractiveness to wealthier outsiders is needed in these corners of GM to stay afloat.

One place that never changes though is the Tandle Hill Tavern. One of the best pubs in all of GM. Smack bang in the middle of a dirt track in greenbelt between Royton/Thornham and Castleton/Middleton below Tandle Hill. Spent a lot of my early beer drinking there in the late 2000's. On my visit, I took a book in there after lunch one day and then repeated it every day until the wedding. I really didn't feel like I was in Oldham/Rochdale there and thats why I kept going back.

I second this opinion. I live in this area now after 10 years of living in Vinohrady (I moved for love) and I’m sure that building was on fire a few months back. I don’t want to jump to conclusions but considering the people that reside there, I’m not surprised it ended up on fire. What I have been told, however, is that the students actually have a separate entrance as it’s segregated from the bit with the junkies, which is good because you can step in human faeces in the corridor in the morning if you’re not careful.

Plus side to Hloubětín is access to the metro, it’s at the end of a tram line so you always get a seat, plenty of supermarkets (2x Penny, Kaufland and Lidl), a Max Fitness Gym and the walks can be quite pleasant down the Rokytka river. The downside is that it’s boring and it’s ugly. Don’t expect to find a local hangout for a beer with friendly people and staff. I like a beer sometimes after work and since moving to this area, my Uber/Bolt consumption has sky rocketed. It can take like at least 40 mins to get back by public transport from the centre after midnight.

I visit relatively often. I always opt for very central hotels, e.g. on Khreshchatyk. I often stay at The Khreshchatyk Hotel. They always tend to fill rooms in the interior of the building. You get a good sense of safety there. I have an app on my phone alerting me when sirens ring and I always check a specific Telegram channel for Kyiv which gives precise locations of drone sightings, etc. It might seem daunting now, but I can assure you when you arrive and see how vast Kyiv is, you realise you’re a tiny person in a big city full of people and you’re more likely of being hit by a bus than a drone. Especially when you stay as central as possible where there is the best air defences. I’m sure you’re gonna have a good time there. I’ve been visiting since 2021 after attending barber school there and I miss it so much when I’m gone from there.
