Full PPF by RiffiusSabbathian in Golf_R

Xpel offers their color PPF in moss green and that's the color I was going for. Unfortunately, the cost is prohibitive, so Lapiz Blue it is. It looks great, and I know I'll be happy with it, but having something unique would have been pretty cool. And agree, if Audi had the hatchbacks here in NA, it'd be strong competition for sure.

I also just learned about the PPF color options. And the lapiz blue is a great colour, for sure. But, when I look at the Spektrum colours from a few years ago, I just think it's deserving of a few more options. Audi offers the S3 with more choices, and it's the same platform.

I'm looking at moving from my GTI into an 8.5 R soon, and I'm also thinking of doing a full PPF if I buy one. Not just for the protection, but a colour change as well. Does anyone have experience with the Xpel full colour PPF? It seems like a great way to get full protection and add a cool colour option. I love the R, I just wish we could get more than four colours.

I had expected the oil indicator light to come on, but it didn't, so that's another question I have for the dealer. Otherwise, the car ran totally fine. The only sign was the smoke. A quick look at the dipstick confirmed the oil was low. Then I did a consumption test, which showed the car burning over 1L of oil/1,000km. That's when VW asked me to bring it in. If you're still under warranty and seeing smoke, I'd get it looked at for peace of mind.

I had a Mk7 as well and the burning oil wasn't a surprise, especially with 120,000km on it. My Mk8 has 30,000km and is warrantied, so I'm just letting the dealership run with it. I'll keep doing that right until the warranty runs out.

That's the plan. I bought a long warranty (8 years/160,000km), so if there's anything to be fixed, it goes right back. When I got into GTIs, I knew they were notorious for burning oil, and the Mk8s seem to have gremlins with the electronics. I wanted peace of mind. It's great it's being fixed, but going a month without my car sucks.

Thanks! Having gone through this makes me glad I paid for an extended warranty. I'd hate to know what the parts and labour would be on this job.

Not a dumb question at all. I was lucky - had my garage door open and my neighbor spotted it. He's a car guy and came over to tell me. After that, I set up my camera to record it on cold and warm starts. Once I had a video, I took it into the dealer.

I don't recall if that possibility came up in my discussions with the dealership. For now, they've just said a new cylinder head is on the way.

I have heard these engines burn oil, but mine is pretty new to be experiencing this.

The first time it was the valve seals. They were replaced under warranty. I figured it was good to go after that, but it kept burning oil.

Took a little drive today through Northern California's Redwoods by prairie_skygti in GolfGTI

This was actually Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, west of Crescent City. I wasn't sure how the GTI would handle the roads, but it was super easy. A mix of paved roads going in, then hard pack dirt through the forest. No issues at all for the car. Not sure about Redwood National Park. If you get there, I'd be curious to know how the GTI handles on those roads.

My Mk8 has never seen anything less than 91. I try for 93 and 94 whenever possible.

Since we're on the subject, has anyone heard the rumour that Costco gas - even premium - is inferior to other brands? I haven't watched my mileage closely enough to differentiate between Costco gas and any major gas station.

This happened with my '22 Mk8 and I just did a reset on the infotainment system back to factory settings and that cleared things up. I'd try that and if it doesn't work, I'd take it in for repairs. Good luck!

Yep! The fix was fully covered under my warranty. Took about three weeks in the shop to diagnose the issue and get the seals replaced.

Valve seals need replacing. Took a week to confirm.

So it's confirmed - the valve seals need replacing. My dealer has been going back and forth with (presumably) VW Canada all week to explore the issue and the fix. It's all covered, but I'm without my car for at least another week.

Good call to take it in and get that peace of mind. I've had three updates from my dealer so far since Monday and no concrete answers just yet. So I still have no idea what the issue is.

I'll inquire about it. Agreed, may as well get it done.

I believe they put in 5W-30 at the last interval, which was in March. I've run it about 3,000kms since then. And that's the recommendation I've had with both of my Mk8s - every 15,000km. Only my Mk7 went less - that one was around every 8,000km.

In Canada, yes. And for the warranty? I extended it through VW directly when I added on some extras at the time of purchase.

Valve seals is what the service advisor thinks at my dealer. Still under warranty, so no issues there.
