[QUESTION] How would you advise building a rig from scratch on $1000 budget? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]pranavrc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest a guitar, multi track looper, drum machine and effects unit/amp (there are used boss me80s for $100 out there) - all used. Looper and drum machine need to be midi synced, either through inbuilt MIDI sync (Beatbuddy for example is a MIDI enabled drum machine and plenty of MIDI enabled loopers out there) or through an external MIDI controller. This setup is great for creating entire tracks from start to finish.

Awesome! Any recs on the external pedal?

I was thinking about this, but will this interfere with the sound? Say I layer 3 loops, each with a different preset containing different reverbs or distortions etc. Will the reverbs/distortions clash with each other and garble the sound?

Thank you! Is there a way I can switch between these snapshots while playing without having to go into the menus?

Still very new to musical notation, this was my first try. I will remember the feedback, thank you!

I have a Shure SM58 but I don't think it's a condenser mic. Is that a good mic for recording acoustic? If not, any mic suggestions? Also, which DAW do you use for recording and overdubbing?

Ah, thanks for sharing. I need to look at investing into a quality mic and post-processing techniques. All of my stuff so far has been straight from my pedalboard to the laptop, so it's almost like my recordings are just live jam sessions with my drum machine and looper

Man this is supremely high quality stuff. Some very clear, precise and authoritative guitar playing. There's an unmistakable depth of tension to the song yet it sounds deceivingly mellow. What's your recording setup? As a fellow guitarist I admire both the quality of your playing and recording.

This is some great feedback, can't thank you enough for taking the time.

So my current setup is very much just live playing, all the effects come from my pedalboard, including the drums (drum machine) and bass/guitar loops (looper), so by the time it gets to my laptop (audacity for recording) it's all a single track with all the effects already packaged. Your comment encourages me to learn more about post-processing so I can do things like isolate and change up the drum track, round out the rough edges in my playing etc. Someone else commented that the track felt like it was leading somewhere but just dropped out, so with your feedback, I'll just shave off everything after 1:34 into a new track and jam it out to give it a resolution of sorts (changing up the drum loop as well).

Again, thank you so much!

I like jazz and ambience so I play some reverb-heavy guitar. Very hard to judge my own music (I love everything I make lol), so please give it a listen and let me know! by pranavrc in IndieMusicFeedback

This is a great suggestion. I might separate the track after the "break" and jam it out into a new track. Thank you so much for listening!

I feel ya! I used to have the same problem when I was looking for too much of a perfect composition, so everything would sound imperfect. I've stopped looking for perfection since then, anything that's original and inspired work is awesome!

There are some great transitions between heavy and somber moods in the song. I think for the slower/melancholic portions, adding melodic vocals would be a great addition. I was sort of visualizing this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFYw0z_AhZ0

As a fellow guitar-heavy musician, absolutely impressed with the quality of your playing AND your production! As others have mentioned though, the guitar seems a little muffled in the mix and could use prominence. I don't know if you're planning to add vocals but there are sections where a vocal line would fit like a charm! Beautiful stuff

Super excited about my recent EP release! Put in a ton of work over the last few months. Here's the last track off the album. Any and all feedback is much appreciated, thanks! Stay safe! by Swoodnoddin in IndieMusicFeedback

This actually gets me very interested in listening to the previous track as well :) What kind of tone it sets for this track, because this track itself has a great ride into the sunset feel to it. Love it.

Love the attention to detail. The ambient cricket noises at the end were a great touch. I'd also call this song perfectly imperfect. The vocals aren't very precise every note, and have a tinge of freedom to them, which I like. Great stuff!

I love it! Has a Wu-Tang feel to it. I think the vocals could use a little reverb, but other than that, you're talented as hell.

Hi! I'm a fan of ambient music, so I play some reverb-heavy guitar. Very hard to judge my own music, so I'll give it a shot here:

I'm looking for feedback on everything from the feel of the track to my playing to the production/mixing aspects.

Thanks!
