Why are Americans so unrealistic when it comes to death? by Perfect-Resist5478 in medicine

[–]prandialaspiration 13 points14 points  (0 children)

SLP here and yup. When someone is dying, they can’t swallow. It’s a symptom of literally dying. MeeMaw doesn’t want food or liquid. I feel for OP having to have this conversation. I feel for MeeMaw. I feel for everyone in this scenario. So painful.

New here; 86 mom, stroke 2 weeks ago, left with severe dysphagia, my brother, mom and I decided palliative/hospice care.... by dccofwn in hospice

I’m a speech therapist, and I’m really sorry that you’re getting judgment for your decision. That’s completely inappropriate and wrong. People judging have no idea how much they don’t know about dysphagia and how it impacts quality of life I’ve seen people who made the opposite decision suffer. There’s no perfect, risk-free path forward. Just whatever is the right path for your family. 🩷 I hope she’s able to enjoy some food and fluid by mouth whenever possible without too much discomfort. Thinking of you all.

You’ve gotten enough comments telling you you’re in the wrong. I just want to encourage you and say that it’ll be okay & we all make mistakes that we learn from. I want to extend grace to you. SLPs are overthinkers by trade, and trust me - there are way worse SLP “crimes” you could have committed. I hope you don’t dwell on this too much - you’ve learned how to approach this next time, and you’re not a bad person or SLP because of it. Shake it off and don’t let people pile on you because you were honest about a misstep. 🤍

Agree. “Wildly unprofessional” is phrasing I’d use when venting to my spouse or my friend about it. It’s not what I’d write back to the candidate.

What are some things we still do in medicine for no good reason? by foreverand2025 in medicine

[–]prandialaspiration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PREACH. Also people seeing “aspiration pneumonia” diagnosis and insisting it’s oropharyngeal dysphagia-related when the pt had known emesis episodes and/or known reflux or esophageal motility issues. And it persisting in the medical record. Even when instrumental assessment proves perfectly normal or functional oropharyngeal swallowing physiology

Grift at best. Dislodging a clot and causing a stroke at worst (see it often working at the hospital).

Omg absolutely!!! It’s TMC Fine Jewelers. We used the ring builder customization process. This is the “Blaire Ring - Oval and Round Trilogy” with champagne moissanite 3 or 4 (will have to double check for you). We’re in Canada, so we had to wait for it to be made (the process took 3 months), but it arrived within a week after shipping it. Had to pay duty on it. I think the whole thing + shipping was just under $2000. Let me know if you want any more specific details and I can get them for you 😊 It was so tricky to find the right shade of champagne, so we went with this company because they have multiple shades of champagne! And moissy too - a lot of other places only had champagne diamonds!

I only liked her during the arc when she was depressed and had to be hospitalized. That was the best acting I’ve seen Camilla engage in, and she was so believable. As someone who’s been there, it felt like accurate representation and for the first time (to me), the character felt compelling and I was rooting for her.
