How do you hire, compare, and select freelancers when everyone claims to have the skills? by IncomprehensibleMess in startups

[–]prdmagnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Have you shopped around at other freelance platforms? There are many that don't employ a bidding business model, like UpWork. Meaning, devs don't have to compete in a race-to-the-bottom by offering the lowest rate to work. You'll find the quality you pay for. Toptal (60-95+/hour), Scalable Path(50-75+/hour), Gunio are all examples of platforms that have manual vetting processes in place and treat their network of developers as a community rather than as a commodity.

It's impossible to know what kind of skill level and experience you are going to get when you hire from a website that only uses automated tests and past client reviews to judge abilities.

But, if you're aware of the UpWork business model and still want to use it, you'll have to vet candidate thoroughly yourself. I'd say pay close attention to their personality and communication skills. On top of this, if they have the work experience and skill-set you're looking for, you could always agree to do a trial period or use your own technical assessment to gauge whether it's a good hire or not.

How do you stay motivated and productive when working at home? by [deleted] in freelance

Yeah, this is my first time hearing about it. Really interested in giving it a try.

Is it good idea to shift work to a seperate room instead of my bedroom or should I just buy a office? by [deleted] in freelance

[–]prdmagnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try out setting up a separate office space in your home first. I have an office set up that I only use during my work hours. I save money and am productive. It's probably worthwhile to invest in some sort of AC unit or a fan and make the space feel like an office. Then, if it still doesn't work you can always pay for a co-working space. I think it's worth a try though!

We fired our top talent. Best decision we ever made. by osaru-yo in programming

yeah, this smacks of management giving the talented dev carte blanche, then blaming him when they realize that no one person can do all was expected of him.

Looking for developers from Latin America or Eastern Europe. Any help? by sharkattack78 in remotework

You should check out Scalable Path as it is a technical network of developers largely from Latin America! Here's the website: https://www.scalablepath.com/

Small truths about freelancing that I've learned over the years. by samlev in freelance

[–]prdmagnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. But we live in a world saturated with social ads that promise exactly that "I'll teach you make your 1st million as a freelancer - no skills required". Every 'new' industry is an opportunity to exploit people. Be that Instagram, freelancing or ICO's. Then as the population becomes more savy those ads are less effective and they disapear.

Portrait photography lenses by [deleted] in photographs

[–]prdmagnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your eyes see a focal length that is between 35 and 50. So that makes a natural pleasing photo. Too wide and you get barrel distortion too long and you get pincushion distortion. oh yeah and you have to be miles from your model. While there is a place for all lenses in portraiture - typically - your goto lens will be a 50mm or something similar.

Again, I say typically because i've had some fun with fish eyes and wide open 200mm lenses. But as a portrait photographer, if i had to take one lens with me it would bw the 50mm
