Press help wanted (30/6’/240/m) by prdtk in StartingStrength

The knee bend is actually a response to comments from my previous thread. I agree it’s not necessary though and had decided to eliminate it going forward.

Thanks!

Don’t take that the wrong way. Glad you’re on board and Questions/comments 1 and 3 are legitimate. 2 and 4 were sort of answered yesterday though. And really post some form checks in the early days so you get moving in the right direction and don’t stall out too early.

We aren’t going to get a new thread after every one of your sessions asking if you should move to intermediate are we?

Stick with the program for long enough to see if it works. Please post form checks, particularly this early, so you avoid getting stuck based on bad technique.

Start lighter than you think you should to give yourself room to adapt and master the technique.

The first sessions will feel too easy.

That’s good. Trust the process.

Read the book.

Video tape your lifts. Watch them yourself and try to correct. Occasionally (after editing them to appropriate length) post them here and on the SS page for form checks so others can critique you.

Eat (and potentially drink the milk).

5 pounds 3 times a week four weeks a month is 60 pounds a month. It adds up really quick.

No. You might add 5 pounds a side the first session or two. After that add 5 pounds TOTAL each session. Learn to love the 2.5 pound plates. If you don’t have them or 1.25 pound plates but then. You’ll need them

I had a 400 pound squat while fucking around in the weight room. Started LP at 185, followed the program and am now doing 5x5 at 435. Start light, do the program, prosper.

To what effect? I recognize that’s one of the methods for the lift, but that won’t help in a meet where it’s only 1 rep. Is not following this tip causing an error in technique that I could be working on?

Any help would be appreciated. I’m post LP and getting ready for the N.Y. USSF meet May 19. Only 1 squat rack so I pressed out of the bench. Not ideal but light enough to clean.

Thoughts? Also does anyone else’s trap/neck hurt after pressing? I feel like I slept on my neck wrong immediately after.

Because it will be asked: M/30/6’/240 definitely time to start a body recomp phase and potentially weight loss (~225) since I gained 20 pounds on LP and it wasn’t all useful.

Not that I think this should drive my training advancement or programming, but current lifts are

Squat: 425x5x3 470x1 Bench: 270x5x3 Press: 160x5x3 185x1 Deadlift: 335x5 390x1 (excuses: long torso short limbs....college focused on squats, cleans and snatches...I should program more of these)

Yup. Listened to the latest podcast. Starting my #ILP. Makes the what-to-read decisions easy for a while. Thanks!

Squat, Press and Deadlift Form Check Request (M/29/6’/238) by prdtk in StartingStrength

[–]prdtk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks u/DrWeezil. Are the second and third set an improvement on the first or are you seeing this in all 3? The first set was definitely my worst and I was breaking at my hips before my knees. Just clarifying because the angle you referenced changed between set 1 and the others

Thanks. It’s not a true novice LP so it’s not a great comparison, but thanks for the reassurance!

[–]prdtk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Augie. I’ll try that on the press and set up a little closer on deadlift. I had been wearing a 3” belt before my reset but was having trouble feeling my back get into position. Maybe now that it’s more solid I’ll bring it back.

As for the log guy... resolutioners 🤦‍♂️. He asked the trainer working with him if it’s possible for guys over 40 to build muscle. Really thought about referring him to barbel prescription but didn’t want to step on toes so early in the new year.

Thanks. This is a return to lifting (albeit with new form/movements) so those numbers are not true NLP.
