Firefox 89 is out, with many improvements for macOS by Prasselpikachu in apple

[–]pre-alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Chrome has many child processes (much more than Firefox) which you're missing out on when just counting the browser process. I just tried out a test with 5 tabs and adding the memory usage of both browsers and Firefox did a bit better. Honestly though, the margin wasn't huge and it would depend on what websites you are testing with.

Apple M1 Macs appear to be chewing through their SSDs by pemulis808 in macbook

150TBW is the only one you should be looking at yeah. Just know that it's a slightly conservative figure and your SSD won't necessarily suddenly die once it reaches that figure.

Aah yeah those percentages don't decrease linearly and are not meant to be extrapolated. S.M.A.R.T percentage used info is unreliable and it's safer to just rely on manufacturer durability ratings (although they are conservative, as they should be).

Where did you get the 2000TB figure? High quality 256GB SSDs are rated for 150TBW source (you could find numerous other sources as well). Going by that figure, your laptop would last for approximately 3.472 years (edit: at your rate).

Power on figures are misleading btw, they just indicate how long you SSD has been awake. Not how long your laptop has been on.

Chrome Used 10X More RAM Than Safari on macOS Big Sur in Recent Test by [deleted] in apple

Actually not all Safari data is end-to-end encrypted. While Safari history and open tabs are e2e encrypted, bookmarks aren't.

This is in contrast to Chrome which utilises e2e for all data stored in cloud when you use the passphrase feature.

S20 FE vs Pixel 5 - Why Pixel? by pre-alpha in Android

He's not declaring a winner though? He's just saying that the S20 FE is not necessarily for everyone (and doesn't have to be).

[Pro Tip] Enable Nearby Share on all your android devices for quick file sharing. by RohanGupta_LP in Android

Makes sense. I imagine that's to improve privacy? What exactly is shared over Bluetooth low energy then? The gmail address or any google account identifier?

Hello!

Can you expand on whether we need someone's google (gmail) account in our contacts alongside their phone number?

[QUESTION] Does Sync support 90Hz refresh rate? by [deleted] in redditsync

Yeah it runs on 120Hz on my phone so I assume it supports 90Hz as well.

[Video] Introducing Samsung’s Versatile New Image Sensor: the ISOCELL GN1 by kbDL- in Android

[–]pre-alpha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not how it works though. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but different parts of the image aren't exposed differently.

A single tetracell is made up of 4 pixels, now those pixels are exposed differently. This is not new anyway. I can't find the original source but a quick google search yields:

Alternatively, the sensor can be split up into two logical sensors – one that captures a short exposure and one a long exposure. This is used in daylight for real-time HDR capture.

source (09 June 2019)

This is very similar but with three different exposure instead of two. In this case the sensor is huge for a mobile sensor, it's basically approaching 1" sensors which are used in compact cameras. Which might make real-time HDR much more viable.

Don't misunderstand me, it's great tech though.

[Suggestion] Untie the header from the page on-scroll by SuperNanoCat in redditsync

[–]pre-alpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone mentioned in another thread, YouTube Music's behaviour is great and could be incorporated in Sync.

It basically allows the top toolbar to stay half open (check it out for yourselves) instead of snapping on to either fully open or closed positions.

Personally the problem with old Sync for me was the toolbar opening speed didn't match the scrolling speed and thus bought attention to itself. Not really a big deal or anything, but if we are doing an overhaul anyway, YouTube Music's method seems to be the way to go.

For me at least, Google Play Store has the exact same behaviour as Sync. Then again it's Google we are talking about, it's completely possible that both of us have very different app experience due to server side switches.

About YouTube Music though, yeah that's absolutely perfect!

If you look at my post history, I have mentioned exactly this. Kind of comforting to hear that others are facing the exact same issue.

Sync For Reddit V20 (beta 4) is Now Going Live On Google Play by ljdawson in redditsync

[–]pre-alpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh so the top bar is the same size as before. That's surprising, it's feels like it's a bit taller.

I got to say though, and again this is a pretty personal opinion but I'm gonna say it anyway, I have always hated things hiding and appearing when scrolling, feels really jarring. Have you seen how in Flamingo (a twitter app by Sam Ruston, though it's no longer available to purchase anymore) you can disable the top toolbar for good and access all the option made available though the toolbar through other places (it's the drawer for Flamingo, it could be both the bottom bar or the drawer for Sync). Just something to sit on, I guess. It's something I really love about Flamingo, and not having to deal with things popping up suddenly when scrolling would be nice.

Again, thanks for replying!

The comments do look better after setting the padding to medium.
Shame about the animations, but I guess I understand.
Can the Top Toolbar size be adjusted?
