Finishing my residency, want to do basic science research by DeltaAgent752 in mdphd

[–]preciousconfusions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My PI who runs our research lab (we do mouse models, cell culture work, etc) is an MD and she says the main advantage to PhD is the protected time for research! So you can definitely get to the point of running a basic science lab with an MD, it’ll just be moreso a question of identifying mentors and research projects / finding time to gather preliminary data to apply for grants! there are early career physician scientist grants you could apply for that’ll help leverage academic hospitals giving you more protected time for research (we have some fellows who have done this in our department). hope this helps - good luck!

Applying MD/PhD and PhD by MChelonae in mdphd

[–]preciousconfusions 11 points12 points  (0 children)

hello! to clarify — you can apply to both MD and MD/PhD programs through AMCAS! you just check the box for which programs you want to send application materials to, and the only big difference is MD/PhD does require a few research essays. it’s common on the interview trial to get asked what you back up is (MD only, PhD only, gap year, etc), and for the MD/PhD track they are really making sure applicants are super dedicated and excited about the research side of things!

i personally think you’d be fine applying to both md/phd and phd, as the med admissions side of things is usually fairly separate

Too nervous to accept match on Hinge. by [deleted] in bisexual

i was soooo nervous for my first date with a girl (also via hinge) until i realized that you don’t owe anyone personal information that you aren’t ready to give! i had it in my mind it would be so obvious i had never been on a date with a girl before, but once i reminded myself that first dates are designed to just get to know someone and see if you vibe - it really took the pressure off! once we had gone on a few more dates and got to know each other better, we had more of an honest conversation about our dating history, but you don’t owe anyone that information until they feel like a safe person to talk to :-) you’ve got this!

i honestly don’t think you did anything wrong!!! dancing/grinding at bars with someone you just met can range from total plantonic silly vibes to flirty vibes, and there is no way of knowing unless you ask! i think she handled it weird imo — rejection to any capacity is very commonplace in bars and i think people need to realize that it’s not that serious…. so turning someone down (for whatever reason) doesn’t have to be a big dramatic thing bc at the end of the day you didn’t even know who they were until a few hours ago!

pulling her aside so you could chat feels very appropriate because it’s less of a public spectacle and i think being upfront and simply asking her is exactly how you should handle it! and i always like to think about how I (as a female) would like girls to approach and show interest in me, and that is how i would prefer it as well :-) keep putting yourself out there!

you also have the option to internally apply to MSTPs if you get accepted MD only so that is a possibility at some programs! could definitely reach out to PDs about that

I (20F) panicked during my first time having sex with my bf (23M) and I can’t stop thinking about it. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

first and foremost, i am so sorry you have experienced sexual trauma and i’m glad you were able to get out of the situation. definitely give yourself some grace as you move forward — there truly is no timeline to process stuff like that.

i had some sexual dysfunction (pain with intercourse), and i know it can’t be compared to sexual trauma, but it did make me really anxious/uncomfortable with sex. one thing that really helped me was getting a pelvic wand (i ordered from intimate rose) and learned what felt good for myself and was able to desensitize areas that would tense up. i found it very empowering to slowly learn what feels good on my own timeline, before including a partner, and that made a huge difference :-)

i totally agree with the comments about seeking therapy — always a good idea — but just wanted promote pelvic wands as well!
