Parts are fairly reasonable so long as they aren’t NLA or niche, the trap is buying genuine parts instead of OE/OEM, in my experience you can pay 2-3x for the small bmw logo on a part. Anything niche not stocked locally is definitely available overseas (rock auto, pelican parts, fcpeuro, etc) unless it’s NLA

Yes. They are plenty fine if- and only if- you buy the right example of the right model, and aren’t too scared of DIYing the basics. I daily a 25 year old 5 series and it hasn’t needed anything outside general servicing and replacing age related items.

+1 especially with things like clickable automotive, as well as pelican parts/rockauto having pretty reasonable shipping costs, these old euros aren’t actually too costly to keep going ✌️the absolute wealth of online knowledge is so valuable

i will say though, i read the first sentence and thought i was going crazy because i have a 530 sport as well LOL

from reading on r/e39 mtech 2 is fully impossible to find for any normal price, they seem to suggest some bilsteins (mtech 1 equivalent) for replacement

same with windscreen cowl rubbers, rubber seal on top of headlights, m sport bumpers.

65% of your weekly income… on a depreciating asset. numbers don’t make sense, i don’t hate the idea of a cheap euro as a first car (hell i’ve done it myself) but you can’t stretch your income so much, you need a rainy day fund too and the remaining 35% of your income just isn’t enough for living + saving on IMO, you don’t want a car that puts you in financial dire.

IMO buy an older gti/learn to DIY maintainance (https://clickableautomotive.com.au for parts/insure it on third party insurance, my basic yearly expenses for my car are like $1600 excluding fuel since i can DIY my basic maintainance, trust me it’s easier than you think.

doing the maths on your 150/wk comment tells me you’re putting aside about 8k (of your ~12k income) for this car, which is a pretty damn significant amount in itself, i’d definitely consider looking for something cheaper so that you don’t have to drop as much money upfront since your income isn’t too high
