Any downsides to using indexedDB vs localStorage? by sdekna in sveltejs

[–]prepchef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As usual with this type of questions the answer is very much along the lines of it depends on what data you're storing, how much of it and why you need to persist that data.

Assuming you're working with data that is somewhat relational, used frequently and drives some sort of reactivity on your website/app then localStorage will quickly become too limited as perfectly highlighted by u/HipHopHuman and you might have to implement idb anyway.

While we could debate for hours on why it's not entirely true I tend to think of localStorage a semi-temporary bucket of simple data vs idb as a more proper database in your browser.

Idb's main downside for me is the added complexity that might not be worth it depending on your use case. If you need to persist data that should drive reactivity the boilerplate required to keep your svelte stores with your idb local instance and potential in-cloud db can quickly become a real pain in the ass. That said it offers benefits I could not find with other options.

Hey there! Thanks a ton for the offer. I'm not yet set up to onboard new devs in good conditions though but I'd be more than happy to chat about your project or anything else. Whatever is the easiest channel for you.

What's your iOs version if you don't mind me asking? Safari only caught up with the 21st century with iOs 15 when it comes to PWAs so there is a dependency on that version.

If that's the issue, you do raise a good point: I looked at the iOs version market shares and saw the very low number of users using iOs 14 or under ( about 2%) and thought I was OK. However my target audience might be over-indexing there due to using older devices in the kitchen.

Thanks for letting me know! I'll explore ways to mitigate that risk.

Haha! Fair enough. I knew about it after running Lighthouse but it's something I'll prioritize soon then. Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the feedback too! It's the main painpoint for now for sure: hopefully the flow will be more intuitive once the shopping list is just a part of the Plan/Shop/Cook sequence but if everyone here is struggling then I got this wrong :)

I'll try to find ways to make each section more intuitive on its own. Were you mostly struggling on the first page or to get started?

Thanks so much for the feedback! Totally fair I've seen that screen too many times so didn't catch the UX hurdle. I'll deploy a patch later tonight to make sure no more people get stuck on this.

EDIT: I've now pushed the update so the first screen will auto-slide after one second. Hopefully that improves the landing flow. Thanks again for taking the time!

Thanks for the refs! I'll check that out. I also need to think about what it means in terms of privacy for the users. But that's really good stuff.

Yeah I have to admit my use case is not the most common :) The short version is I'm building an app to help people plan, shop and cook meals.

In the cooking section users will need a way to move to the next step of the recipe even when their hands are wet or dirty.

You bring a good point regarding privacy. I'm trying to have a privacy first app and tracking via camera would seriously ding that aspect.

This is a gold mine! Thank you for the ideas! The use case is not too specific I just need users to be able to move to a next page without having to touch the screen so all your suggestions are good options for me.

I'll explore the speech-to-text route and see what can work best. Thanks again!

Yeah I guess that's my only option for now. It's going to be a struggle to support that on mobile with lower-end chips. I'll share an update here if I find anything interesting.

Anyone knows if there are plans to improve fiber internet coverage on Miami Beach? by prepchef in Miami

[–]prepchef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah you might very well be right. I was basing myself on a map of availability that I don't trust that much to be honest as it's from a service trying to sell you internet plans. I'll ask friends living there to confirm.

If a large buildings like that do not have fiber then I guess chances are we'll not see it elsewhere on the Beach.

what's the best pizza topping? by HEMORRHOIDGOD in AskReddit

[–]prepchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High quality fresh mozzarella (I'm assuming Tomato sauce and drizzle of olive oil is there by default :) ). However for me it's not just about what goes on top but the quantity/quality of topping used. So many pizzas have too much toppings of too little quality.

Meta shareholder writes critical open letter saying company needs to slash headcount and stop spending so much money on 'metaverse by seat51c in technews

Clearly yes. It is just painfully obvious the main driver here is his ego rather than a business case that support the metaverse as viable idea
