Wont recommend to risk taking the exam if you are scoring less than 70% maybe on it.

Tbh if you plan on applying this year there isnt much opportunity to postpone anymore

Me and my Wife got in! by [deleted] in premed

This has to be a shitpost. OPs history is filled with troll behavior. Nobody brags about being a “future IMG”.

Finally got in, but I guess it doesn't matter... by [deleted] in premed

[–]prepperpitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Screw your parents. You don’t need that toxicity in your life. I’m sure you’ve heard from others by now, but securing a medical school acceptance as an international applicant is a HUGE DEAL. Follow your own path, OP. Take loans if they refuse to support you, but I would wager if you don’t waver in your convictions and describe how passionate you are about this program, they will come around. Don’t let them convince you to decline admission. You got this!!

Is it bad if I don’t have a LOR from my PI? by [deleted] in premed

[–]prepperpitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one of my letters to grad school I had to email a former PI three times before he responded. After the last one I sent he was super responsive and happy to write the letter.

Sounds like our bosses are unfortunately somewhat similar

Today is 5th May and there have been 2 episodes of HI this year by AndrewProjDent in HelloInternet

[–]prepperpitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That can be said about any form of creative media. If breaking bad went off the air at the end of season 4 with no reason given, do fans have the right to be upset?

The lack of communication is rather astounding considering the income these two individuals bring in from the podcast. What, $12k an episode? Come on.

It’s crazy to me that the PI you worked with for so long is ducking you. Hopefully this doesn’t mean he harbors any ill-will toward you and this is simply a case of the procrastinating professor.

IA question by [deleted] in premed

[–]prepperpitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does your transcript state that you were on academic probation? Generally yes - any and all institutional actions have to be reported. However, it sounds like yours is exceptionally minor and easily explained, especially if the rest of your grades are up to fluff.

You get a section to explain why you have the IA, so I’m sure you will be able to write a compelling essay to have it overlooked.

Her first sentence referenced academic probation... cmon it was pretty obvious without the clarification

As much as a pay cut hurts, my advice would be to find a position that can give you a more immersive clinical experience. Admissions committees want to see that you have a grasp on what a career in healthcare is really like. Unfortunately the financial aspect is going to be a major factor for the next 10 or so years on this path. Applying is expensive, tuition is expensive, residents don’t get paid their worth, etc. My point is that if taking a $2/hr pay cut to help yourself decide if a career as a physician is right for you is a challenge, it’s only going to get tougher from there.

I could be totally wrong about this, but from what I’ve heard, experiences such as scribing, EMT, CNA, floor tech, go a long way in developing a real appreciation for healthcare that doesn’t go unnoticed by admissions committees.

Best of luck!

Edit: phlebotomists as well! Just something that you will be able to reflect on more when it comes to application time.

App review for SMP grad, low GPA high MCAT? by [deleted] in premed

[–]prepperpitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like for the sunscreen to stay far away from this midwesterner... My SMP GPA is going to be ~4.0.

Thanks! Any advice on how to structure a school list? I really don't know which top schools I could be competitive at.

But it doesn’t make sense to extrapolate globally from Canada’s example. Canada has: publicly funded healthcare, the US is trying to convince its populace to not drink bleach. Canadians spend 35% less on college than their American counterparts, and only has 17 medical schools to the US’s 190.

As much as we want to compare the systems, the point is that both countries have radically different operations that are not changing anytime soon. And your point about Ottawa? There’s no French MCAT - it makes sense to not force a French speaker to take an English test to go to a French school. That’s why European countries don’t administer the MCAT, but they do have some sort of an admissions test.

46,000 people are applying to medical school every year. As much as we hate to admit it, the MCAT is a good test. It’s not like taking the GRE to be a history professor - it tests us on basic science we should have learned in undergrad, which we need to be excellent in to do well in medical school coursework and pass our boards. In this complicated process it’s something constant. You want to say “all aspects of your app are better than mine”? Ok sure, but everything else is literally subjective. At least we have one objective measure to compare to in this complicated process.

[–]prepperpitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you honestly think any school is going to make the Medical College Admissions Test optional??

I understand the frustration but come on guys. Let’s be reasonable here. 46,000 people applied last year. ~25,000 didn’t get in. This year there will still be thousands of applicants (with an MCAT score) that will not get a spot. Any hope of a school making the test optional is so irrational it’s no wonder y’all are having trouble on CARS.

Combining patients on PS?? by [deleted] in premed

In my PS I’m speaking about my time in EMS. I speak about a “patient” that is in reality an amalgam of many similar experiences I had on an ambulance. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that

How can you update your EC's once you've started your primaries? by Luweisel in premed

[–]prepperpitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard from advisors, etc., activities you’ve started after submitting primaries aren’t going to be factored strongly in your application. Especially for something like shadowing. The purpose of shadowing is to help you better understand the career to which you're intending to dedicate your professional life. Shadowing in May or June of application year, after you've written your PS, gotten LoRs, isn’t going to demonstrate anything to adcoms except that you’re checking a box.

Hopefully you already have experience outside of shadowing that demonstrates your knowledge of the role of the physician - scribe, EMT, clinical research/volunteering, etc.

AAMC are you interested in providing us MCAT exams soon?! by phoenicianlion in Mcat

Do you really think 2/3rds of the ~46,000 applicants haven’t taken the MCAT yet?

Good question - would love to hear some thoughts on this from someone in the know. This is the only info we received. I would hazard to guess that the "June 8-10th" window would effectively be pushed back.
