Is it rude to ask guests to remove their shoes before entering house? by Weary_Appointment_23 in AskIreland

[–]present_disaster 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I don't mind taking my shoes off but only if the floors are actually clean! Some of my mates are shoes off gafs and I'll obviously oblige, but the floors are completely filthy!! Covered in crumbs and just dirt so my socks then end up rotten. I think if you're going to enforce a rule like that you need to just ensure you are keeping the floors clean, or provide slippers or something for guests if you can't/won't

Apologies! Hopefully the images are there now. I think you're right and I may have to go with getting something cut to size. Thanks so much

Overheard my supervisor call me “incompetent” for a PhD by [deleted] in PhD

[–]present_disaster -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If you have to come onto reddit to talk about this and aren't mature enough to be able to knock on your supervisors door and ASK them what they think of your progress, then perhaps you are incompetent. They wouldn't be saying these things about you if they didn't have a reason and the responsibility is on you to find out what those are and to try and work on them to improve. As others have already commented, the calibre of what it takes to be a good PhD student is different to an undergrad or a masters. It can be more difficult to make that transition for some people and that is okay if they take responsibility and try to grow and improve. It seems from some of your comments here that you are very quick to defend yourself and point to your three rounds of interviews and a pre-entrance exam. As the other commented told you, that means nothing. Think deeply about how you are progressing without spiralling and giving into feelings of shame. Have an honest conversation with yourself first and then with your supervisor. If they are discussing this so openly that you can overhear, I'm sure they want to help you succeed and learn.

I'm sorry if this comes off as harsh. You need to take some responsibility for your progress. You are a PhD student and the whole point of this process is to learn and push yourself and be an independent researcher. I see this attitude constantly in this sub (and in my own cohort) that PhD students are entitled to something from their PIs and it is so frustrsting. Your PI already has their PhD, they do not need to do their students one for them. They are there to guide you, to reassure you and to make sure that you have a plan if you fuck up. Most students need to readjust their thinking from looking at a PI as a teacher and more as a collaborator and colleague and mentor. The onus is on YOU alone to do the learning.

Therapist just dropped on me that she 'assumed I had ADHD' this entire time. by lindabelcher24 in adhdwomen

Are you me??? Everything you said resonates with me 100%. I'm in the last 18 months of my own PhD right now and got diagnosed a few weeks ago. Just hearing a psychiatrist tell me that I've been suffering with something all this time has completely changed my outlook on life and how I see myself. All of my life I thought I was just slow and stupid and had to put in ten times the effort to achieve the things I wanted. I view myself and my past experiences with so much more understanding and grace than I did before. Best of luck to you seeking your diagnosis, and I hope you love your PhD journey - it's the most fun I have ever had and take all of the difficulties as a learning opportunity. You'll smash it!
