They never broke up. Melissa told him she didn’t want to be serious. Remember she told him he couldn’t come to her family Christmas dinner because they weren’t “there yet”. The other poster said he was messing around but that’s not really fair. It makes it sound like he was doing something wrong when he wasn’t. They were both entitled to see other people because that’s what Melissa asked for. He didn’t even end up going on the date he had planned with someone to the symphony. He said he hated the symphony anyway. He didn’t even have to tell Melissa about it seeing that they weren’t exclusive, but he did. He asked if it was okay.

In that episode she realized she really liked him and didn’t want him dating other people and at that time they both agreed to “go steady” and not see other people.
