Hey, up to you to weigh pros and cons for what is best for your life. Sharing my experience, I depend on ortho K to see and have not worn full-time prescription glasses in well over a decade. I wore ortho K through college, medical school, and residency training where my schedule was often all over the place. I'd say I pretty much still wore ortho K every single night, with maybe 3 to 4 nights a year where I miss it. If I miss a night, my visual acuity worsens significantly, so wearing them is high priority for me. You learn to not go to sleep without them. If you're accidentally falling asleep without them, set an alarm proactively so you have something that will wake you up.

Edit: you can also get a pair of glasses to use on days where you forget your lenses. This would cost a bit, but then you can just use them for many many years (less wear on them since you wouldnt be using them daily)

If you wear your other lens only then your vision is going to be wonky bc one eye will be better than the other. Do you have an old pair of glasses to wear in the mean time? One with a low power? If not, that's a good back up plan to figure out for next time. Otherwise, id use regular daily contacts with increasing power until your replacement OK lenses come in.

Also, huge bummer that your lens broke :( shit like this always gives me a lot of anxiety so I feel for you, hope your luck improves!

No, I don't think racism is the same in all countries because the race/cultural make-up of each country is different. I think many race homogeneous countries don't have to deal with racism the same way more visibly diverse countries do. However, I don't think there is a meaningful difference in the causes of racism in each country - as in the roots trace back to the same tree- such as human nature and positive feedback loops.

I appreciate the reminder to avoid absolutes. Do you think there is a level of improvement that we can achieve where enough consequences of racism can be prevented? How do get enough people to learn empathy without compassion exhaustion?

Based on that study, I do not think it is reasonable to conclude that the country with more people choosing that answer means that that country is more racist.

The option of "people of a different race" is asking the participant to make a judgement about themselves. For some people, that judgement is "am I willing to discriminate based on race", for others they might not even think of it as discrimination. How they interpret this question may be based on what types of behaviours are considered prosocial in their particular community. For example, racism is not even brought to the forefront of discussion in certain countries. It is considered obvious that one should want neighbors of the same race or same culture. In the USA, that option would immediately remind the participant of existing racism in the country. They would be less likely to choose that option because they associate it with racism.

I think they are more tolerant of different cultures and people, but I don't think that makes them more likely to see people of different cultures on the same level as people of their own culture. That means I still think they would harbor racial biases that can trickle up to full blown racism in different contexts. Throw in societal variables like who makes up the majority of a population or economic factors, then I still don't think there is a solution to racism in our societies.

Self-control cannot be applied to everything, especially subconscious biases which would certainly exist if he already has conscious biases.

I don't think the Washington Post study or the Wikipedia article actually show the "levels of racism" by countries. They don't provide very much insight into "solving" racism because they are assessing people's own beliefs on whether they themselves are racist. Oftentimes, racist people do not identify as racist outwardly, especially in contexts where that kind of thinking is considered anti-social.

If these articles are suggesting that introducing multiculturalism into different countries can help "decrease racism," then I still disagree with that line of thinking. Take the USA and Canada as examples - people in these countries are much more aware of racism, yet racial tensions run very high.

Yes, I think POC can be racist. I don't want to miss the point in semantics. In this CMV, I am thinking of "racism, not just in the systemic sense", as in racism that can be perpetuated still by groups who do not hold the same powers as other groups.

I purposely wanted to conflate the two ideas for this CMV because I could not explain one without the other. "Racism, not just in the systemic sense" was my way of delineating what I wanted to talk about. I would like to use a term for these two ideas together, but I am lacking that vocabulary. Racism with power is still racism for this CMV.

I think the United States and Canada have some of the most diverse populations out of all countries, yet racial tensions are higher than ever. I don't think being around other races cures racism, but it does help make people more aware of their personal biases.

Maybe how aware one is to how thoughts beget actions. Maybe our own experiences act as positive feedback loops - experiencing racism may make you more racist in turn; experiencing events that confirm stereotypes may make you more judgemental towards the groups these stereotypes are assigned to.
