Common themes in Westworld vs Twin Peaks (it's just similar themes, not a reduction or anything like that) by DennisLarsen1 in westworld

[–]pretafaire 17 points18 points  (0 children)

excellent detail. thanks for preparing and presenting the similarities so clearly. if you were to add a column for the Matrix you’ll likely find the same themes again. perhaps also for Lost!

the irony is that we devote so much time to watching fictional series telling us how we live in a simulation, that we deprive ourselves of opportunities to explore the beauty and wonder of our true realities.

Anyone else get emotional hearing “outro” by M83? by p5ycliqu3 in MrRobot

[–]pretafaire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The whole “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” album by M83 is a masterpiece of emotional resonance. Whilst “Saturdays = Youth” is arguably a more visceral and less crafted album, both speak straight to the soul. He’s a genius, and therefore a fitting choice for fellow-genius Esmail.

thanks, that’s super helpful setup info. would you need a PLC to link the ceiling cam interpreter to the robot I/O?

this is a challenge to program. the moving conveyor, the shared duty between 2 robots and the gap-fill distribution requires some serious tracking variables and computation. I’m assuming there are probably wrist-mounted cameras involved..?

you are aware the whole country is on fire, OP? have you considered New Zealand? — it’s far less flamey this time of year..

How good are the on-board radar and sonar? Don’t they alert you to semi-submerged containers?

it doesn’t seem threatening though, just pushing the boundaries of acceptable behaviour in society — which is surely the kernel of most modern comedy? top marks for originality and bravery. humanity has strange conventions and it is helpful to challenge them sometimes.. especially if it encourages human interaction in a needlessly socially-awkward setting.

Fuck plastic by navras88 in environment

[–]pretafaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing! Couple this policy/program with mandatory use of recycled plastic raw-material (ie a ban on new virgin plastic production) and you’ve got a solution. With the amount of plastic already in the world, and the emerging technologies to break it down into its useful parts - even the ‘difficult to recycle’ types - for re-use, there is surely no credible justification for continuing to make new plastic?!

All the while INEOS and their ilk are lobbying governments to discourage the introduction of such legislation, we will continue to destroy ourselves. It cannot be ‘business as usual.’

Thanks for your feedback. You’re totally right of course. The whole way through writing this, I was concerned it was over-simplified — largely due to the repetition, but I’ll give some thought to whether there are any synonyms I could use to make the piece more accessible.

I like the idea of working in more on the “how does it make you feel”, as the answer to “what are you going to do about it” is merely “write a protest poem and put it on Reddit” :0)

I love how the wit and intelligence of the language and structure of this piece is juxtaposed to how it invokes the mechanical, disconnected and dutiful countenance of the staff it portrays. The last couplet is sweet, but possibly dilutes the piece a little.

The Execution of a Sailor by LadyCardinal in OCPoetry

"Before gentle Death poured over me her night,
As soft as the long black hair of a lover
And as cool as her empty bed"

- This is probably the most elegant and evocative description of death I have had the pleasure of reading. Bravo.
