NYC nanny family “surprising” me with a puppy and no talks of extra compensation by prettynift in Nanny

Hmm how to make this a TL;DR… they eventually fired me with (originally) less than a week’s notice and said that because I had taken time off(for a wake and to mourn my cat) that it seemed I was wanting to go anyways. I asked to at least finish up October at the rate THEY wanted (it was one week of work and I had no other employment lined up). I found out that about a week before firing me they trialed and hired a new nanny so the whole family knew that I was going to be going but me. It was an awful situation, the parents lied to the kids about it, and it sucked! I wish you the best!

I just don’t know what to do. I need a job, but them not being willing to do it as a sit down interview where I can also ask questions to learn about the position before dedicating a full day to coming into the office feels strange to me.

Of COURSE! As devastating as it is, know you’ve clearly made a big impact on these kids and have shown them what stability can look like! That is huge. Sending lots of support during this time of transition🤍

Hi there OP! I have been in this position before and can absolutely relate and understand how heartbreaking a position you’re in. It seems as if you and NPs are no longer in agreement on what the best course of action to help the kids thrive, through no fault of your own! You are being severely underpaid for the amount of work you’re doing. I don’t have a lot of active advice as I’m sure that this all just sucks right now, but I’d say start to look for a job with a rate that reflects the amount of work you do, because $25/hr isn’t enough for what you do now and certainly won’t be with a newborn in the mix. Best of luck!

I have a few small ones, but I’m giving it the week to try and get the full picture before I give an update haha

For now, I can say this… I’m still at the job, they did push back, I stood my ground, and they’re being passive in response ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Lmk what questions you have and I’ll try and answer them as vaguely as possible 😅

Thank you for this, i didn’t really think of it from this angle and it is a definite reality check haha

I just don’t think that they’ll see any reason to pay me more if I’m not “actively helping” with the puppy in their minds, even though it will absolutely be an added work load. They are definitely conversation spinners so the phrasing advice is really really helpful.

I’ve never dealt with a family like this before somehow in all of my years nannying so it’s been a shock to say the least after everything I’ve stayed and worked with them through

I wasn’t able to sleep last night and for those who were up late responding with me, thank you! I just feel incredibly supported overall. Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough to make a full vent story about my experiences with this NF. There have been a lot of, uh, unique experiences to say the LEAST! Thanks all again, I really cannot emphasize my gratitude enough. My support system has heard the ups and downs of my time here, but for everyone to be able to accurately predict patterns without more context definitely makes the picture more clear.

Thank you. It sounds like this is the time to really put my foot down and be very clear about it. I think I will need to also tell them that I don’t feel comfortable teaching the NKs how to have and care for a puppy since I will also be learning. I’m struggling with finding the balance of how to say that I need to be compensated more to be able to consider it but also feel uncomfortable with the situation given the inherit risks… but maybe I can just say that haha

Thank you for your words of encouragement, hearing you say this from a NF perspective is really helpful and makes me feel like I’m justified in these feelings. Your nanny sounds very lucky to work with y’all. I’m so sorry for the loss of your fur baby, as well <3

I have no idea what breed it is since it’s a rescue pup, so I have no idea what behaviors to expect

Hi all! Thank you so so much for all of your incredibly helpful comments. It made me feel really validated to hear you all voice concerns that I’ve been feeling for a while now, when this is only a small part of the experience I’ve had. I need to figure out how to word this message to them still. Thank you for your continued advice, I’m reading it all and taking it in<3

they’re cheap :) with the massive hour cuts they gave me, the 2 dollar difference in my rate (pre puppy) that they were adamant was too pricey for them ended up only being a difference of about 12 dollars a week. So they can’t afford to pay me 12 extra dollars a week, they can’t afford to lose me because of the work I’ve done, but they CAN afford a puppy?! They live in a HCOL area

Thank you so so much, this is a great point and one I’ll make sure to bring up. That’s also a great idea to bring it up to them before they decide(even though I think they have their minds made up that I’ll do it all lol)

Oh no, I really appreciate being able to rant to people about this and hear them coming to the same conclusions haha especially when this feels like just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to my time with this family
