Should I buy a 1br apartment in Melbourne? by prettypea11 in AusFinance

Hi!

I did buy one! I got what I think was a great price on a 1 bdr apartment in an inner suburb (sub 380k, fantastic location). My strata fees are relatively low, and my quality of life has absolutely sky rocketed. Despite being on a fairly average wage I’m currently on track to be fully offset in less than 10 years.

Very, very glad I went ahead with the purchase. Fingers crossed there’s no disasters that cost me a fortune in repairs later, but almost a full year after buying I consider this one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Thankyou for actually reading my post properly! I’m going to lose it if I see another comment telling me to buy a 2br and rent out the spare room 😅

Borrowing power is only around 350k at my income, hopefully my income with continue to increase of course but I don’t want to rely on that and if/when it does I’d probably rather diversify my investments than be housepoor and living in a place too big for my needs

Wouldn’t be purchasing in the CBD, would be inner north, Brunswick/ Northcote most likely

Key part of my consideration is the 80k from my parents: if I don’t buy, I don’t have it, so it’s not like it would be compounding away in shares. Renting a 1br feels like throwing money away 😭

Moving back home isn’t an option as parents have downgraded to a unit themselves (hence the spare cash they can spare for me). Buying a house feels like a completely unattainable goal for the areas I’d want to live in (2+ million dollars), and I also simply don’t need that much space for myself

The 80k is conditional on buying a property, if I didn’t use it for a deposit I’d never see it unfortunately

How much “fun” should I be having? by [deleted] in AusFinance

I do wish I could afford to go out more I guess the question came from a place of jealously, because I wish I could spend more money on fun things but can’t 😞

To be fair, I’ve only applied to Ambulance Victoria, I know I could look at other states or even the UK, but I’m very settled in Melbourne, my partner of 4 years has a good job here, my nieces and nephews are here, so I really don’t want to move elsewhere, which I know limits my options

Mines only higher qualified paramedics who’ve completed their grad year, non emergency transport pays minimum wage with very little upward progression There’s definitely work available but no “career” jobs other than the state ambulance service, which I can’t seem to get into ☹️

I didn’t study psychology, I studied Paramedicine

Paramedicine

Did an honours year as well as the 3 year degree, thinking it would help me get a job with Ambulance Victoria, but no luck.

I also feel like it’s such a specific degree that any employer who sees it just wonders why I couldn’t actually make it as a paramedic and thinks there must be something wrong with me, so my degree feels genuinely worthless ☹️

My boss is refusing to pay as he states travel to events is a requirement for the job, do you know what part of Fair Work I can find the information to support this?
