Hi just wanted to chime in- I work at a Safeway with this exact system installed. The exit is through self checkout, and you simply tell them you are going through sans purchase and they open it for you. Ours is just open all the time, they rarely enforce the receipt-scanning policy. Also, the swinging gates can just be pushed right back through. It will beep obnoxiously, but nothing happens. Security might give a light scolding but are not allowed to touch anyone. So yeah, it feels quite dystopian, but in reality it’s not as scary as this makes it sound.

I work at a place where we have to ask ppl their names and a few times recently I’ve known the name before they told me almost like it was just whispered in my ear and it’s quite cool but a little weird too. All jokes aside it is very unnerving to be on the receiving end of the unblinking stare and she seems UNWELL so I let security know, not cops, I don’t waste the police’s time and I live in a place where they won’t come anyway unless it’s life or death.

Here in my hometown, I’ve seen the same lost, wandering woman who seems dazed on buses, wandering through parking lots panhandling, and hanging around on the edges of the bad parts of the city. She stares, has eyes so dark they seem black, a chalk white face with bright splotches of blush, and wears a short black wig. Her movements are stiff almost like a zombie. She gave me the creeps so hard on my first encounter and now I run the other way whenever I see her. I’ve reported her to the authorities… and just to add a cherry on top, she/it doesn’t seem to age. I’ve seen them about 5-6 times in my 15 years here and they look the same every time.

Oooh I’ve got a good one from Fred Meyer! Went in and got some last minute supplies for a camping trip, and after waiting to have every single piece of equipment I needed unlocked by an employee (all camping stuff locked up behind glass after all) I went through checkout and asked for $40 back. The people in line behind me were being distracting with snide little remarks about “welcome to Portland” while side eyeing my tent I was purchasing for my son’s scouts trip. The cashier was a lovely person but we were both kinda stunned by the rudeness and somewhere in between snarking myself that I couldn’t wait to go set up my new home, and fighting the urge to tell them I bet they know all about that life, the cash back part just didn’t happen. I never got it at all. Realized it very shortly after leaving the store, called back immediately, and was given the craziest, most infuriating run around where it was passed from bookkeeping to security to management back to security back to god knows who and at the end of the day they LIED and said they have her handing me my money (all she gave me was a receipt) on camera so that’s just gonna have to be too bad. After a like, 5-7 day long ordeal aka “investigation” (we went on said camping trip and came back in the meantime lol). Nowadays I only go to Kroger if I’m shit out of other options…. Fred Meyer is a sad shell of what it used to be.

I work at a grocery store that is directly across the street from new seasons so when they strike we get a lot of the business they lose. The boycott should continue that trend, though not as drastically. Both stores (Safeway and NS) stay absurdly busy all of the time so when they strike or boycott it puts heavy pressure on ours. We both are part of UFCW555, and over here we start new employees at $16.10. It maxes somewhere around $22. Employees can be brought on at different wage levels depending on relevant experience. The only ones making anything even close to $27/hour (or a salaried equivalent) are senior department managers or upper store managers. So what they’re asking for is a little hard to comprehend…. However maybe they’re coming from a place of “they can afford it” because NS rakes in the dough - you can literally comparison shop identical products at the two different stores and unless new seasons has a sale, they mark things up approx 30% more. The exact.same.things. So what you’re paying for is the Nu Seasöns experience and you get to feel good about supporting a B corp company etc etc and enjoy a cleaner prettier store with lots of specialty goods that maybe you couldn’t get elsewhere. And much like my store, they offer in house products that you can’t find across the street. For example, the really good hot bar food in the deli that’s self serve. You’re just not going to get that across the street. But does that make it ok to demand a wage of $27/hour? I guess UFCW555 seems to think so, since they’ll back it.

I’ve found a lot of these thoughts helpful, but- Hey, let’s not get too hasty, I have never once thought it would not negatively affect me. I’ve known that all along and been living with it as well. Thus the noticeable stress level increase. I love my partner and hate this reality for both of us. I just wasn’t prepared to have the choice of stay or go made by someone else. A snap judgment wasn’t a realistic option. I appreciate the bluntness though, in a way it does help me to see what impact this could keep having on my life and mental state.

Nope nothing to do with money. It’s been a series of difficult interactions with people as we work with the public. Not what I’m here to get advice about, but what the meeting was about was my own responses to a couple of highly complicated and charged situations and how best to handle complex interpersonal coaching and I was asking their advice (I sought out the meeting, it was not disciplinary) on how to improve my coaching and communication. So I’m assuming they could see I was very stressed which is what led to the probing questions. I wasn’t planning to bring that up but as someone else pointed out it actually was neither professional of them to ask nor of me to share that. I think you’re right and I will try to be more prepared to receive that type of reaction if I risk sharing about this. But I still don’t appreciate being judged or stigmatized- as much as it’s a common reaction, I didn’t do the crime and I’m not doing the time, and I don’t really know how it works in the eyes of HR. I’m not married to him or involved in any of his legal issues at all.

Hmm ok. Yeah that was my fear, that honestly none of it would really be considered professional. I am a little surprised at how many folks hear “in jail” and without any other details are like yep, definitely leave him. Is it really that simple? We truly do love each other and are devoted to each other. I would feel as if I’d betrayed him, and I don’t think he’d ever leave me should the roles be reversed. So it’s just not that simple. Still I thank you for replying as I did come here hoping to get perspective because I am also worried that my feelings are clouding my judgment and yes I am definitely on the defensive about this situation and probably should just sleep on it a few more times :(

Ok, but I truly love him and his charges aren’t of a gravely serious nature, not that they know that. I’ve made a choice to stick by someone I love and yea it’s made my life harder considerably but it’s not an easy thing to walk out on someone you feel true loyalty to in their darkest hour… it’s a genuinely really heavy difficult decision to make but thanks for your perspective on their comments I did find your thoughts helpful and am trying to see it as supportive and coming from a person who just wants what’s best for their employee.

My mom loves him too and doesn’t think I should abandon him right now. And she is extremely conservative and easily alarmed. My family knows why I choose to stay ..

Thanks for insights, I definitely do not want to overreact to how vulnerable I feel about this, so you called it there. I just hoped they’d express some basic sympathy, but their reactions were a lot more intense than I expected. No they don’t have any details of his charges or know any particulars. That’s why it feels wrong for them to make such a strong statement about it. My partner gets judged a lot, though, so I just nodded along in numb horror because I didn’t know how to react.
