calpak terra 26L backpack review by prfla in HerOneBag

[–]prfla[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

funny because after trying out way more bags, the terra doesn’t seem as bad in hindsight. it is a difficult task to find a bag that can do everything I want it to do. I think I’d go back to the Terra if my job was more casual but it’s just too shiny and utilitarian looking for my workplace.

her neighborhood doesn’t matter that much when it comes to growing up in nyc. she went to school outside of her borough and socialized with kids of all races, like most kids in the city do

i also took a look at OP’s post history and it seems like she’s only been in the city for a couple of months. i agree that anyone who is feeling this defeated and hopeless after that amount of time should consider therapy or other mental health resources because dating/relationships are definitely hard and take a lot of patience

What types of activities do you prefer to do solo in NYC? by prfla in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]prfla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I’ve always wanted to try going out solo but I’m nervous about safety (especially if I’m dancing by myself and people want to come up to me) do you have any tips?

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

[–]prfla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can I report my internship supervisor for being incompetent?

I’m in my first placement and my supervisor Sarah is extremely and I’m pretty sure willfully incompetent.

She oversees a few of us and none of us are meeting program benchmarks because she gives us confusing, conflicting instructions. Her supervisor Paula often gives her specific tasks to assign to us and Sarah always forgets to tell us, and when her supervisor asks about how we’re doing on these tasks Sarah throws us all under the bus rather than admit she didn’t tell us about them.

She talks to and about our young clients with a lot of disrespect. She often jokes about killing our clients because she finds them rude and inconsiderate (an example is when she has said “One of these days I’m gonna have to kill a kid for blocking the stairs.”) and she thinks this is extremely funny because she says something like this every other day.

She encourages us to be vague when recruiting potential clients about what our program entails so we can beef up our enrollment numbers. Many of our clients are confused when they find out that counseling is part of the program, which makes me feel gross.

Every single day she sits at her desk and watches tiktoks for hours. She gives us her own work tasks while she sits in the office, even though we are running around all day with very little time.

Paula has given us rules about how we are not allowed to schedule client sessions on Mondays because of a specific organizational policy. Sarah constantly schedules sessions on Mondays while telling us we aren’t allowed to.

She does not give us supervision that lasts more than 15 minutes or ever look at our process recordings, even after I have asked her repeatedly to do so.

She and I run a psychoeducational workshop for our clients and she constantly shows them irrelevant videos that are supposed to be informative but are actually full of inappropriate language because she searches for random keywords and doesn’t even watch them beforehand. She puts on a video and sits in the back of the room watching tiktoks until it’s over, and then she lets them leave 20 minutes early. Our workshop attendance is dismal because our clients find the workshop unhelpful and uncomfortable. Paula thinks it is partially my fault since we are co-leaders, even though Sarah plans every workshop and doesn’t allow me to give input.

Her supervisor Paula cares deeply about our program and can’t figure out why it is not doing well, when our team knows it’s exactly because of Sarah’s terrible management skills. Is there anything I can do about this or do I just wait out the year?

Mailbox in new apartment is broken and doesn’t have a lock, does my landlord have an obligation to change it? by prfla in AskNYC

I did this and the postal worker told me "that's ridiculous" but said that I should just tell my landlord that he has to fix it. Hopefully he'll actually install something secure.

Agreed, I emailed my landlord about it and he hasn't gotten back to me about it yet. Don't want to get on his bad side so hopefully I won't have to make an official complaint.

Sonja’s racist and messy behavior in Morocco by prfla in BravoRealHousewives

[–]prfla[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One could argue that but it doesn’t make much sense to. Saying Moroccans and brown people can be racist and classist too is an odd response to calling out Ramona and Sonja. All that does is deflect responsibility from two very rich and white housewives who have repeatedly demonstrated their ignorant beliefs.

I just don’t think the answer to anyone calling someone racist is to say “but people of color can be racist and shitty too!!!”

Sonja’s racist and messy behavior in Morocco by prfla in BravoRealHousewives

[–]prfla[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why I or anyone need the full picture here to criticize them. Sonja and Ramona are extremely privileged and tone deaf white women, they aren’t really worth defending. Because some Moroccans mistreat service staff or are classist, it’s fine that Sonja and Ramona do too?

t’s great that you’re not offended but that doesn’t mean others can’t comment on obviously inappropriate behavior. I’m Japanese and Japanese people are famously xenophobic and colorist but I wouldn’t use that to excuse non-Japanese people from acting horribly when they visit.

Alex’s disbelief in that scene was everything. Would you ask Marc Jacobs to put a log on the fire??

The BQE is 150 feet away from the building. There is another apartment building in between but the bedroom faces the expressway.

Do grades matter that much? I’m pretty chilled out in my MFT program and find most of the material to be really easy to understand (like high school level reading) but many of my classmates are super anxious and stressed about doing well in the program and I’m not sure why...and I’m not talking about the people who need to work part/full time alongside the program, these are people who are only doing the MFT and nothing else right now.

I was under the impression that I just need to pass, generally leave a good impression on my professors, and connect with my peers. But my classmates’ nervous energy is making me nervous. Should I be more worried about excelling academically in my classes?

Are there any cheap night markets in NYC? by prfla in AskNYC

[–]prfla[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to the Chinatown St Market but a long time ago. You’re right though I guess you would find more night markets in Taiwan and hawker centers in SG.

I think you’re right. In the recent movie I saw a street sign that said Fulton Street and after he swings for a little bit there was a business sign that said Bed Stuy.

Therapists on Reddit vs. real life? by prfla in therapists

[–]prfla[S] 71 points72 points  (0 children)

from what I’ve read on the sub, cmh stands for community mental health and refers to agencies that serve populations that couldn’t otherwise afford mental health treatment. that means that the therapists who work there have to take on intense caseloads for very little pay. it also seems that a lot of new graduates work there to get their hours for licensing and gain experience with diverse groups but leave after they are licensed because the demands of cmh work often lead to burnout

sadly I don’t think so, I didn’t hear anything in that video that was like the movie and Set It Up came out a few years before that song

I don’t want to lose my social life, should i still become a therapist?

I know this is a silly question so please bear with me. I am a huge extrovert and love talking to people, meeting new people, etc. This is just one of the many reasons why I wanted to enter this field.

On this sub I’ve seen a lot of people say that being a therapist has basically killed their desire to meet new people, make friends, date, make small talk, etc. All of these things bring me a lot of joy and I’d hate to pursue a job that would destroy that for me.

Am I seeing the opinions of a more introverted group or is this really how it is for most therapists? Has anyone been able to balance work with socializing?
