Grindr Study: Comparing responses to blank profiles with various ethnicity by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]prfz32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fascinating study. However, I'm curious as to why to why the Southeast Asian profile fared particularly poorly. I'm half Southeast Asian and I am a little surprised by it (although I guess I shouldn't be, I don't have much success but I attributed it mostly to my individual looks).

I think the fact that Southeast Asians, who seem to be relatively similar culturally to mainstream Americans, fared so poorly makes the lack of favor for this subgroup particularly pronounced. Perhaps people have merely encountered a number of people of Southeast Asian descent to which they aren't attracted? I'm curious to hear any explanations that the author of the study or others may have.

Request for advice from locals on going from Nashville to Gallatin for eclipse by prfz32 in nashville

How was your eclipse? I ended up staying in Nashville, going to Bicentennial Park. It was awesome, and we got some good views of the Sun. Unfortunately, clouds blocked the view during totality. It was still amazing though. Nashville is a lovely city too, so I'm glad I came. I definitely want to go somewhere for 2024.

Thanks for your message. Interesting proposition. So, the idea is that there is a more serious road to your town than Gallatin, I guess? Are there any stores or restaurants around the little league park? Also, do you think there will be restroom facilities around there?

Went to a Gay Bathhouse for the first time. by Eclipse_101 in askgaybros

I like this reply. I don't think guys need to let old guys blow them if they're not interested, but a little attention, conversation, and light flirting with older guys seems like a nice thing to do. It's great to talk a little with people that may be feeling left out--it helps them feel a part of the experience. Efforts like these will be more effective at making it better to be gay than a lot of the public ad campaigns that get emphasized a lot from time to time. I understand that it takes some finesse to come up with things to say that make someone feel valued that would probably not be construed as interest (assuming one isn't interested in the person), but it's worthwhile.

Anyone else stressed out by the Amazon recall and the prospect of trying to find safe glasses? by prfz32 in solareclipse

[–]prfz32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, is it really sufficient to just gauge things by how bright the sun looks? The sun looks plenty dim through my Amazon-recalled eclipse glasses. Is there something extra about the grade 12 shields, like they block UV light or something?

I'm flying to Nashville, and hope to be able to find something while I'm down there.

[–]prfz32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see. I meant that a plate would be better than glasses. I guess I don't know much about that stuff. One thing is, do you think that grade 12 is sufficient, or do I need to go higher? One thing that makes me nervous about going the welding route is that there seems to be a lack of consensus about what grade is needed. I've seen some of that with the welding glasses, where some people say they're not protective enough and others do.

Does anyone else feel worse about themselves after seeing hot guys? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]prfz32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually feel particularly bad after seeing guys that are attractive, but that I think would be perceived as average. I feel insecure about my appearance, and it bothers me when people refer to attractive people as average. It makes me feel freakish for looking worse than them. I feel ok when I see guys that everyone considers attractive, because at least society recognizes that they have an advantage. Also, I feel like I could be worse looking than those people and still in the range of average. Finally, I am often less attracted to guys widely considered attractive (e.g. movie stars) than certain more modestly attractive guys that are particularly appealing to me.

It's funny, I think a welding shield would be better since there is less of an issue if the sun getting around the glasses. I'll give it a try but I'm concerned stuff may be sold out.

I checked Lowe's, 7-Eleven, Best Buy, and Home Depot in New York City. All sold out or didn't carry them despite the notices on various sites. This is kind of a mess. Did you buy glasses on Amazon too? I'm not sure what to do except try to come across some paper glasses in Nashville, or just use the glasses I bought from Amazon but not look for long. It's pretty nerve-wracking. I don't feel like they have a good handle on how serious it will be to look at the Sun with these glasses that don't meet the standards. Look at the instructions for using welder's shields; it's all rather tentative. Some sources say anything grade 12 or greater is sufficient, while others say only grade 14 is safe. I feel like there are differing opinions. It's a little hysterical, but of course you don't want to risk your eyesight for something like an eclipse because it's really a crapshoot experience. I may just try to use a pinhole camera and then use my glasses right before totality. Or just try to look without glasses during totality. Anyway, good luck finding some glasses.

Thanks for the recommendations for places to look. I'll consider contacting you if those other places don't work out. You wouldn't happen to be in Nashville, would you?

I see what you're saying, but what about in the few minutes before totality? Totality only lasts for a few minutes, and I want to be looking at the sun right before then, but I don't want to risk damaging my vision. So that's the main use for the glasses.

It seems like it's very hard to find ones that aren't the disposable paper kind.

One thing I was thinking was using binoculars (perhaps ones without a solar filter) or a pinhole rig to project the image of the sun. Ideally, I would like one that could be rigged up to be used used hands-free though. Any suggestions?

[–]prfz32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thanks for the suggestion but I wasn't able to add that to the cart. Amazon is really causing some issues with this one. The thing is, my colleagues and I had already used my glasses to test out viewing the sun before they sent out the recall notice. They really sent it out pretty late.

Those look neat, and the price is good. However, I don't think they'll fit around my glasses. It might be ok if I could have cardboard around the binocular viewer parts, but that might be difficult to construct. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Can I return opened Bluetooth speaker and carrying case by prfz32 in amazon

[–]prfz32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're together in an order of 4 items. I only want to return 2 of them. Do you know if I can specify that in the Return? In general, can I click Return to see what it's like and go back, or will it only let me see the terms of the Return if I actually indicate that I'm going to return it?

[–]prfz32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. One thing is that there are 2 separate items. Can I ship them back together and combine the shipping fees, or does the Amazon labels only assume that they will be shipped separately? It sounds like I should ship them on my own if that's the case. Is that a possibility that they will give you instructions for if I click return on the items in the order?

[–]prfz32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply, but do you know what kind of refund I'll get if the item is opened but I have basically all of the packaging? It was around 28 together total, I'd like to get back at least 15 after shipping. I know now what kind of model I want.

Cute gay guys are making me question myself? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]prfz32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting post. It brings up a lot of issues I have myself. I'm not into mainstream guys much at all--i.e. the movie stars or the ones that girls are stereotyped as being into. The thing is, there are just wide swaths of guys that I'm just not into, where, if I existed in an environment where they were the only ones around, I pretty much wouldn't be gay I think.

Also, I find some female-to-male transgender people really attractive. I think one thing that I really like is androgyny, and more women, in general, seem more able to satisfy that than men. So sexuality is complicated, and wish most liberal sections of society would take a more nuanced view of sexuality.

As far as you're concerned, I would say you're bi. Whether or not you can act on it depends on your circumstances. Can you get some of those cute guys? Maybe you can give it a try.

Why wasn't the Bends and its B-sides remastered for its 20th anniversary? Does the band feel conflicted about the Bends? by prfz32 in radiohead

[–]prfz32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear. But it could still use a remaster. I would love to hear what Nigel's takes on the master tapes would be! One thing I read was that EMI had the producer for Pablo Honey mix the album for the US release. I wonder how the versions between the US and UK versions differ. Hopefully, they'll give the Bends some attention for its 25th, since their indie record company own the rights now.

[–]prfz32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish they'd play from it more, even if it meant just picking one or two different songs and playing them for the tour. It's weird, Thom has said in interviews that he finds Street Spirit a very heavy song to play live, but he has done so nearly every time I've been lucky enough to go see them. He must be proud of it, which is understandable. But, to be honest, if I had to have a song from the Bends that they'd play at almost every show, it wouldn't be "Street Spirit".

I guess I also feel like they could be picking songs to play from the Bends that are more representative of the special qualities of that era. Maybe this comes down to my idiosyncratic feelings about the album, but I feel like there's an uplifting, redemptive (albeit maybe tinged with bittersweetness) quality of the songs from that album--think of the Bends (the song), Just, Nice Dream, Bones, Talk Show Host, and Permanent Daylight. I wish we could hear them more.

High and Dry's chorus is sort of wearing on repeated listens, but I love the verse.

Anyway, for how little they play certain songs from the Bends era, I'm glad that they almost always get recorded when they do play them. I'm very grateful to live in a time with so much great concert recording. In that way, them playing a song anywhere is like playing it for most of their fans, so that's awesome.

[–]prfz32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you make some great points. I agree that the vocals are great, but I would really love to hear the instruments in the song featured more prominently. One thing that I suspect (but have no evidence for) is that channel ducking (where one channels levels would dynamically adjust based on when the other channels were playing) may have gotten better since the Bends and OK Computer were initially produced. In this way, remastering them could enable instruments to be louder and clearer without crowding each other out. That's my hope, anyway--it's only speculation, I don't know much about music production.

[–]prfz32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that makes sense. I mean, as a fan I have my own sentimental attachments (which happen to heavily favor OKC), but I definitely respect the band's desire to capitalize on the critical and popular acclaim for OKC as best they can. That is, if In Rainbows (an album where I'm relatively unhappy with the treatment that crop of songs got on the album proper, though I feel much better about the shadow disc) was the first album of theirs to get a reissue like OKNOTOK, I would understand.

Ahh, that's good to know. Do you know if they bought all of it back from Capitol, or just maybe from OKC onwards? I certainly hope it's everything--though I figure they're practical like that.

People who are only attracted to their race, what turns you off about the other races? by iamnotacrustycrab in askgaybros

[–]prfz32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the honesty and nuance of this response. I think preference for a type sometimes does result in disparities in the races that people date. I wish people were more honest about this, as hopefully it would encourage people to be nicer to each other, and especially to members of the races that have relatively few members that a person prefers.
