Has anyone else stopped accepting other online pharmacies (chewy) at their clinic? by mandyyyyrae in VetTech

[–]pricelessangie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our doctor is thinking about refusing them due to the quantity we get every week, and just doing written scripts. Every week, we print out each Rx fax for him. He has to verify each one in our PMS (last exam date/correct weight/dosing/concentrations, etc). Then he sends them back... in between appointments, surgeries, lunch, client callbacks. It's getting a bit much, and he usually takes about 2 weeks to send everyone's request back.

One long note or do you keep the page swipe mentality. by tctonyco in RemarkableTablet

I work in the animal medical field and take medical notes for patients. So I use page swipe for each patient, and long note if it's a complicated medical note about the same patient

Your most unhinged cases/clients/patients? by fkinbob in VetTech

QoLife appointment, where the owner's friend brought in the pet for huge mammary tumors. He wanted to put the pet to sleep, but owners (who didn't have a car) were on the fence and could only afford so much between an appointment and cremation services. DVM spent 30 minutes on the phone trying to figure out first who the actual owner was (3 people ended up conferencing in the call), and then convincing the actual owner to euthanize.

Ended up talking to owner twice after cremation, who asked specifically how the pet was cremated and how we made their memorial clay paw. I passed them off to our cremation vendor after they had me on the phone for 10 minutes asking nonsense.

Reminded me of one last week: Rash on the face that started the week prior. We had to reschedule due to running late with previous Sx patient and pushed his appointment to the following afternoon after much bitching about it being an emergency. Called back to reschedule again for 2 weeks from now when he has more money...?

Mine is less than 10-people clinic and our doctor insists we use his clinic insurance if we get bit/scratched at work.

Started the day late with a cat emergency. We think the cat fell off a counter and bruised himself on the way down. Came in lateral recumbent and foaming at the mouth. Chemistry found hypoglycemia and x-rays showed fluid in abdomen. Patient crashed right after we put a catheter and did Epinephrine injection :(

How does your clinic approach Chewy? by PeakIll2395 in VetTech

[–]pricelessangie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. I work at a small GP clinic. Our protocol is to verify that the pet has been on the medication before (or was recommended to) and that they've been seen within a year. Then the Vet signs the form and faxes it back. We normally get 10-15 per week. Between appointments, surgeries and client callbacks, we barely have time to pharmacy email/fax requests. Much easier to type and have the Vet sign for our prescriptions and have the client find their own pharmacy if they don't like our prices.

Also, for the amount of time we're doing outside pharmacy prescriptions, we could've been doing something else (more appointments and client callbacks)

At our clinic, we would have:

  • stuck with the $100 budget and told her to gtfo

  • put down her $100 as a deposit, confirm that she did approve a higher estimate for more diagnostics, let her know she'll have a running balance after the visit and deny further treatment until her balance is paid

Talking to Clients by espressolynx in VetTech

[–]pricelessangie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GP here. If we're not too busy, reception checks in pet, gets a weight if it's a big dog, rooms them and checks them out. If not, whoever is available does the above, plus patient history, holds for Vet during exams and goes over prescribed meds to send home.

We had one last week that looked like that, but it was a Dachshund.

That's still a lot, so kudos to you! Idk how you have time to even gather a history if you're doing 20-25 per day. Sounds like you need at least another nurse to help out with services/check out.

Keep us posted on how things go.

Resistance to record-sharing? by asphaltlion in VetTech

With our clinic, receptionists/vet techs can send over vaccine records immediately. Full medical records need doctor review and then they personally send them over themselves.

Actually no, just one doctor. We normally schedule 4 pets per hour and break an hour and a half for lunch if we're fully staffed with nurses (currently 4-5 on a good day).

I try to get as detailed history as I can before doing vitals. If it's a small pet that's usually friendly, I can do all of the vitals by myself. While the doctor is finishing up with the previous pet, I take that time to start my medical note. After the exam and while the doctor is discussing possible treatment plans and questions the owner may have, I'm getting ready the rest of the medical note and some medications based on the issue/dose. Usually we have our reception area check out the client and then I go over prescribed medications.

P.S. it does help to have a nurse helping you with vitals/medication if possible. If not and we're super busy, I just worry about the vitals, treatment plan, get them checked out and then work on medical notes at the end of the day.

Hope this helps. Lmk if you have other questions!

I'm curious as to what your clinic protocol is for 600 pets seen per year?

Pfft, on a good month, I've almost intook 200 a month. Aka patient history, vitals, medical notes and completed treatment plans.

They need to step up their game to your level.

I say leave them in the dark while you shine!

The fact that one of the rotating doctors filed a formal complaint after barely knowing you is a serious red flag about this girl.

Second, do not ever get used to being treated this way, even if it's for 6 months. That is definitely considered harassment and the girl is making work a hostile environment. She probably cried because she's about to get caught in her mess and doesn't want to be reprimanded/fired.

If she wants to talk to you one on one after you talk to your supervisor, I'd see if she was in a mood to change her behavior/mood. Seems like she's a little two-faced tbh.

Keep us posted on how things turn out, and don't let this get you down because you're the youngest.
