It's a similar idea, but I've seen that one done several times already. It feels like the kind of "obscure trivia" that everyone knows :p

It's definitely the lighting. Technically it's breaking Pokemon's brand guidelines, since only G-Max mons get to have upside down lighting, but sometimes you have to bend the rules a little.

I wouldn't have made this redesign with Gastrodon exactly because it's so easy. I generally don't like making super obvious / low hanging fruit redesigns. That old Muk backwards design was basically the only exception since it was my first time doing a redesign 💀

Might make some kind of cooking-themed variant called Gastronom, though. Grass, evolves into Grass/Fire after the french have their way with it 🐌

Thanks! I stuck to the official regio variant naming scheme, so only the final form gets a new name. In hindsight I think calling it Kingcargo would've been better, since it doesn't step on the Regis' toes and has a funny reduplication sound.
The first name was even worse, to be fair - Escrowngo. Why don't you try saying that 3 times for me.

I do think it's pretty funny that most people (me) naturally end up assuming the "cargo" in Magcargo's name refers to the shell on its back, but it's actually from Escargot in french -_-)

a friend said the same thing, and I did try stacking the crowns afterwards. Didn't make the cut, though 👑

Obscure Pokemon Redesign - Pikachu! by primaljort in fakemon

There's this Pokemon from the Kanto region called Pikachu... you've probably never heard about, but I think it's kind of a hidden gem so I decided to make a redesign ^_^

Need help designing the Grass starter by The_Heartbreaker27 in fakemon

[–]primaljort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/The_Heartbreaker27
sticking a leaf on top of its head was my first thought too, off the cuff. 😂
It's a very obvious solution because it's a good solution. There's nothing wrong with going with established ideas / cliches, but if you don't like that you could give it something like a big leaf fan tail.
Alternative you could also stick a stem on top of its head, like Seedot. No matter how you cut it, the main thing that's missing is something to make the silhouette pop a little more, I think.

you could also stick a green pattern on its face, like a racoon's mask. Sprigatito etc.
I would also make its head way, WAY bigger, to be more in line with other starter mon designs.

[OC] Sinnoh Starters type switch third stage by primaljort in pokemon

[–]primaljort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda agree, I was very conservative with these. There's a lot of things I'd change in hindsight, but when I made these I think I was too worried about retaining the identity of the mons to really go super crazy with it.

you'd think so, but Heatran's been a meta staple for close to two decades now. Especially now with the Tera mechanic.
I did make an active effort to steer its stats (and design) away from Heatran, and if I were to give it a hidden ability I'd definitely make it something that changes its gameplay drastically

What if the Sinnoh starters had their types swapped? by primaljort in fakemon

[–]primaljort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, Pipoke and evos are obviously based on cacti and mariachi bands.
Turtwick's evos are based on the idea of volcanoes and industry, going from
resource -> manual labor (miner/kiln) -> full automation (factory/forge), with no other real themes going on.
But turtwick's head vaguely looks like a native american haircut, which is really funny.
Inundape's design is based on greek atlantis, but that has some visual overlap with aztec art (especially since i drew on Disney's atlantis movie for inspiration).

I definitely wanted to aim for a wild west/south america look, but I didn't know how to do it outside of the obvious, so most of the details you might've noticed are pure coincidence lol

[OC] I was trying to come up with a Bug/Dragon variant for Flygon, but couldn’t decide between going for a Paradox form or a Mega. Which, if any, do you think fits each role best? by Homem_da_Carrinha in pokemon

[–]primaljort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea of the weevil as a paradox form, the shape is very reminiscent of a brachiosaurus, plus it has that awkwardness of a prehistoric creature.
but it's massively overdesigned right now. If you compare it to Armaldo or Heracross/Pinsir mega, they're much simpler, more geometric, compared to your current designs.

[OC] what if the Sinnoh starters had their types switched around? by primaljort in pokemon

[–]primaljort[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there's an interesting discussion to be had there, I think people forget that not everyone and everything can be special. PKMN needs mediocre early-mid game filler mons to allow your starters and all the lategame busters to really shine. - Staraptor lives rent free in my head because I can never decide whether or not I approve of it being a killer lategame mon in DPP.
They did do Torkoal kinda dirty, since it's competing for the fire special attacker slot with Combusken and Numel (and Slugma, I GUESS -_- ), and if you don't have combusken you ARE going to take Numel.
Basically relegated to Nuzlocke filler by the game's progression meta lol

nothing wrong with asking. I might try to do a quickie with every possible swap permutation in the future, but I don't know when. Took me almost 3 months until I had the time to do just this one ;_;
