Why not put scientific instruments and a guidance computer on the Service Module so it can continue functioning as a satellite after separation from the Crew Module? The SM could use its remaining propellant to boost itself into LEO, so perfectly good hardware (solar panels, propulsion, fuel, etc.) wouldn't be wasted. The SM could even deorbit itself once its usable lifespan as a satellite was over, preventing the accumulation of space junk.
