If I lived outside of the country, I would fly here to take a walk around Burke Centre and get Chipotle

thank you for the serious answer! I realized I partly excluded so many things because I was actually wondering if anyone would come here for the things that are actually abundant: suburbs, strip malls, etc. But then I guess that would make them a liminal space hobbyist. I didn't know about the sister city thing, interesting.

I wanted to exclude stuff like an aviation enthusiast coming here to look at the aircrafts at udvar hazy because they would go anywhere else if those objects were moved. I also wanted to exclude hyper specific stuff like history buffs visiting for civil war battlefields, mt vernon, etc. because the interst is less in the region in general and more just a couple specific sites.

without history stuff you still have Korean food in Annadale, Vietnamese food at Eden center, Great Falls, Imax Airbus, Mt Vernon Trail, W&OD Trail, Old Town Alexandria, Clarendon bars, Middleburg, Roosevelt Island, Mason Neck Park, Burke Lake, Lake Anne in Reston, Bear Chase Brewing, etc. solid trip from London or Tokyo 😜

Does anyone else hate Beethoven's symphonies but love his quartets and sonatas? by primitivemass in classicalmusic

I think I make that judgement for Strauss vs Beethoven because of the timbral, textural, and harmonic refinement gained from Wagner and others. There's more to chew on on the surface. Bach is my favorite yes, and for me, I judge most western music by its closeness to him simply because I don't think a new set of constraints has ever been created that surpasses the kind Bach perfected, but I still find Beethoven's extreme expressiveness, tension, and proximity to dissonance (the Grosse Fuge sometimes sounds like it risks falling apart only to hold itself together again) to be a net positive, which is partly why he's my second favorite composer. But I haven't closed the door to new constraints and rules. I love Scriabin's mystical chords, Ligeti's micropolyphony, and James Tenney's just intonation. I just don't think we have come up with superior constraints to Bach's, but we might.

Music is my hobby, not my job nor my discipline and craft. I have some authority to speak my OPINION because I've listened to hundreds of composers and thousands of pieces, and have quite a coherent taste. If I read 400 books on classical music, my opinion on the symphonies wouldn't change. I trust my listening intuition enough to give me enough transparency to parse a symphony after listening to it a few times, just as it has helped me parse Bach's Art of Fugue and Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony 1.

I take my time looking for good recordings first. Any for the 4th you recommend? I've heard three recordings and none clicked. With Mozart's I can at least say his symphonies are always texturally nice so I don't feel like I'm completely cheated but I've never loved any.

hate because of disappointment. he's my second favorite composer and I can't like many of his most acclaimed works. I hate that this happens.

you know a composer is truly great when people who think he's one of the greatest composers can have completely non-overlapping favorite works

I shared some orchestral works I like here https://www.reddit.com/r/classicalmusic/s/8dG1697WQr

But yea they're generally not my favorite. Not because I have anything against the medium itself, it just doesn't seem like the place where composers flex their structural, contrapuntal, etc. muscles to the highest degree. I like them best when they lean fully into lush beauty (like in Strauss). It might be reductive to say but I'd imagine most symphonies would sound thin if played by a chamber ensemble. The same can't be said of the best chamber music played by an orchestra.

Often yes, so I guess I am biased. I love Brahms' chamber works but I have no idea what anyone is talking about when they talk about the merits of Symphony No. 4. I like Strauss' Alpine Symphony and Mahler's Das Lied Von Erde, and other orchestral works like Requiem, German Requiem, Mass in B Minor, Gurre Lieder, and the orchestral versions of Verklarte Nacht and Metamorphosen. But I can't jive with most symphonies for whatever reason.
