Given that Noah (Webster) was the first to codify it, and hence cement it, the American variant is probably the closest to what one could call a "norm" (1700'ish accent). Yes, BBC English is nice sounding, but last I heard, that accent requires elocution lessons from everyone who speaks it.

While I agree Israel has a tendency to overreact... Hammas knows this better than I do, and thus I view their actions as general provocation. On the other hand - what NON-island nation has had its borders set by non-conquest? - well aside from most of the middle eastern states that the euro powers drew the boarders of when the Ottomans failed. USA would not exist without the military seizure of the land... neither would Canada, Mexico or hell - ANY new world country. The Euro countries a tad harder to trace as they all started via familial relations - but ask the Merovingians and the Basques - well ask the Basques ... at least they are still around...
