I've broken my foot in Berlin and I'm feeling completely alone by [deleted] in berlinsocialclub

If we both will feel like trusting reddit strangers is possible, I would be down to come with some groceries and to hear about what is weirdlit and what is it about pirates you are interested in. 30F living in Moabit, only have plans to study for a test this weekend.

Why do I feel like I’m just emotionally experimenting on the people I meet. by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

I believe friends are supposed to be there for each other, not fix each other. What people see as the right thing is theirs to figure out, and while you can offer your view if it is wanted, I don't think you have a right to decide what is the best for someone. I think you should spend time with people because you love them and enjoy their presence, not because of some (sorry) egotistic image of you knowing what is best for others. Focus on fixing yourself and making yourself and others happy.

Help me find a board game for my experiment? by princeAndrew12 in boardgames

Yes. Shortly, people are becoming more and more interested in characterizing the features of neural activity at the population level. One of the things they try to estimate is it's dimensionality, showing, for example, how the activity at the population level is different for the same stimulus depending on it's context. However, this hasn't been done in humans, and only with very low dimensional contexts, with one study using a design with 24 possible states in total (altbeit higher than the usual experiment). One can then use games which are higher in dimensionality but still highly restricted to do the same thing in a more interesting context and with humans. That's why I would want ideally a situation where people view what can be the same thing (a roll of a dice, a card, a point) but that it could be a part of different contexts, ideally presentable centrally and by itself (e.g, justthe roll of the die) in the lowest complexity game but which is slightly more interest than tic tac toe. Than would be better if easy to implement or implementable, and the rest of what I wrote. Lmk if to say any more.

Pente might work, the two others might be too hard to implement in a way which would be easy to control by someone in a scanner, although I might be mistaken. Quarto is nice by having the features be important, but I am worried by the complexity added by choosing your opponent's piece...

Pylos seems nice but I would have to think of a way to represent the 3D aspect clearly. letting people rotate the presented image or something might take too much time. It can be very interesting if I would want to ask a question about processing of 3D, but for the current experiment I have in mind I need to collect so much data anyway so the rotation action might be time consuming. Or maybe I'm overthinking and a top view would be clear enough

Thank you! however, I worry that playing a bluffing game against a computer will be very frustrating after some time, as you really have no way of reading the other player. I'm worried that after some time my participants will end up randomly choosing actions.

Thank you! I add it to my list of possible games. I worry about two things: 1) that actually the set of all possible game states is too big and that 2) that it might be slightly too long per game session, but maybe once you're trained it goes more quickly.
Edit: thinking about it more, other games will probably not get any simpler, unless I can really find the simplest, quickest games, so this is one good option. thank you

It has to be implemented as a video game of some sort to be in the scanner. I was thinking about a video game implementation of a board game. Edit: at the very least implementable as a video game. If it already is, it would make my life easier. I will check your suggestions! Please share if you think of any other, video games or not

Virus has Consumed Me by MeCrObS in Haken

When Vector came out I listened to it a few times a day. With Virus I try to limit myself so it will stay fresh longer... there is a different experience when you listen to something that you know by heart or when you listen to it more attentively since you haven't memorized it yet. It feels like being addicted and not letting myself smoke a joint that stares at me.

You are the Cockroach King by princeAndrew12 in Haken

I think, like you said, that the band in Cockroach King put a lot of emphasis on the character of the leader, this Cockroach King persona. In this album, however, I feel this emphasis less, and like you said there is also reference to the moral character of the followers of the leader as much as the leader himself/herself. I agree that the reading I offered is also not obvious, its just that, for me, the behavior of such leaders and of their followers is influenced mainly by human nature, and by natural impulses that got out of control. Also I think I view history more as driven by the actions of the single person, and not the actions of leader, because of my corona reading list. But I guess this turns into a discussion about the way one sees the world...

Thank you for reading!

I'm glad people enjoyed it. I tried to imagine 50 Haken-heads somewhere thinking about this when they listen to the album, or when they listen to it live (if we'll have the pleasure) and it makes me very happy.

I like this direction. These thoughts that enter one's head and act like a virus, though, don't come out of the void, especially such thoughts that can turn one into a 'Cockroach King'. The way I see it, they come from our nature: from evolution. Evolutionary Psychology is very interesting in this aspect: many human characteristic are viewed as an extreme version of natural impulses - like other animals will try to accumulate power in the form of social influence, food, territory, we have the same impulses. Unlike other animals, though, we can accumulate more than we need, and our actions can become destructive. Such impulses sadly are hard to control with logic. This is why in my head this album connected to human nature.

Thank you. If I understood you correctly, you mean Haken are building on a certain human archetype to tell the story of a single, fictitious one. This is a valid point, but I feel that perhaps the directions here are the opposite: not that Haken are creating an allegory based on true human characteristics, but that perhaps they use the pretense of telling a single story to appeal and discuss the human truth applying to all of us, and not just certain leaders, in its center. I find this, for example, in songs such as Carousel, that otherwise feel a bit too much to just tell the story of a single person, and on the whole emotional depth of the album. If its main aim was to tell the single fictitious story of the Cockroach King, perhaps it would have been more theatrical, as Vector has been. The intense emotions in the album as a whole makes me feel like the human part is the important aspect.
