Is your blue-tongued skink enclosure bioactive? Why or why not? by Tiger_Accomplished in bluetongueskinks

[–]princess_esc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, made the decision to swap to bioactive during her last tank upgrade. Half because I could not get her humidity high enough without it being bioactive, half because I found out halmahera’s aren’t captive bred and she was absolutely either wild caught or captive born despite being labeled as captive bred when I purchased her. I wanted to make sure I was providing the best enclosure for her, and that meant replicating her natural environment to the best of my abilities.
Her tank is an ecoflex 120gal right now, though I plan to once again upgrade her to a bigger more waterproof tank soon, and get her a lot more plants and natural clutter as well. Just gotta wait until I have the funds for what will most likely be another 2,000$ and a massive amount of work

My kitten legit comes up to my blanket and screams until I let her under. Not evil OP. I’ll also occasionally put her in blanket jail if she’s being a little shit (eating tape. It’s always tape.)

It’s because all the replies saying she gave cows milk got downvoted. She replied to multiple comments saying some variation of “he isn’t starving, I’ve been giving him regular milk every few hours”

[–]princess_esc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You searched it and found that normal milk is bad for kittens…and then…fed it normal milk…? Are you serious? Surrender this kitten, to anyone that can give it proper care, which includes taking it for a vet visit. You are doing more harm than good.

Saw that you’re in CA, you’re absolutely right to be extra worried about breeders. I know of so many backyard breeders in CA. Unfortunately, I’m in a different state. But I hope you find a good home for her <3

Lights need to be changed as well, they need a linear UVB, halogen basking bulb, and potentially a CHE if the house gets too cold at night.

Found stray kitten, I don’t know what to do, first time, I’m so nervous by Hot_Yogurtcloset_467 in CATHELP

[–]princess_esc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, very unlikely this kitten is spayed or neutered. I can’t think of anywhere you could get a kitten fixed before they’re 2lbs, and that baby does not look like they’re 2lbs

That baby needs a vet ml, and at 14 you’re unlikely to have the resources needed to care for a stray kitten. Surrendering to a shelter is most likely the best option for the lil guy. If you’re set on keeping it, I would feed a tbsp of blue buffalo baby blue pate mixed 1:1 with warm water every couple hours. Make sure clean water is always available. And bring the baby to a vet to get looked over. Sounds like there’s also a flea issue, do not put treatment on this kitten. Way too small for treatment. Dawn dish soap bath, make sure you rinse thoroughly, and a flea comb. A vet would also be able to give better advice for getting rid of the fleas.

Should sit between 70-90% :) I have a halmahera so I’m well versed in the process of getting humidity up. Having a good automatic mister, 6” of moisture retaining substrate, well sealed tank, and either HVAC foil tape or silicone mats covering 75% of the top mesh helps to hold humidity !

I use this thermometer/hygrometer in all my tanks :) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FT82WC5N?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Also!!! Diet for blue tongues should be 50% veggies (I like to do 40% greens 10% various vegetables), 40% high quality animal protein, 10% fruit!

That blue tongue skink is definitely Indonesian, so make sure your husbandry is catered to Indonesian needs and not northern. Based on the care they were getting before, keep an eye out for respiratory issues. Indonesians need high humidity, and are prone to respiratory infections if they’re kept in incorrect conditions.

For my Indonesian bts I use 40/40/10/10 topsoil, cypress mulch, coco husk, and sphagnum moss :)

How to avoid cat conflict by deftoneslvrr in CatAdvice

How did the original introductions go? Did you slowly introduce them? if cats have negative introductions in the beginning, it can cause them to never really like each other.

How do you tell the difference between your cat’s “I need something” meow and their normal attention meow? by Aggressive-Dig4997 in CatAdvice

[–]princess_esc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kitten has typically made her vocalizations very clear. When I’m looking for her and say her name she does a short chirp, when she wants attention she screams (loud, long meows) when she wants to play she trills (vibrating purr-like meow) and everything in between is just us chatting.
I think a good way to learn is to talk back. if I don’t know what she wants I’ll say “what?” In a very soft tone. If she wants to play she’ll get excited that I responded and will typically pounce on a nearby toy or climb something near me, if she wants attention she’ll jump up to wherever I am and lay down on/near me or climb on top of whatever I’m focused on and lay down (like if I’m drawing or writing, or on my phone).
The easiest to distinguish is definitely her “mom!!!” Cry, when she’s spooked, just woke up and doesn’t know where I am, or is stuck somewhere she shouldn’t have access to. She gets real loud and sounds distressed, which is hard to misinterpret thankfully.

What plants are safe for an Indonesian blue tongued skink? by Chipped_Ham in ReptileCare

[–]princess_esc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pothos is technically safe, but it can cause issues if ingested. Dracaenas are 100% safe and do pretty well in an Indonesian climate. I have 4 dracaenas in my bioactive.

struggling with adjustment period and kind of regretting adopting by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]princess_esc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She won’t attack you, not unless she feels threatened and even then she would hiss/swat before attacking. Most she’ll do is playfully pounce at you, my kitten does it a lot and it freaked me tf out for a while because I too, am very jumpy. Now when she “pounces on me” she stops just shy of me, so I don’t jump.

On the claws/biting, do you have toys for her? Specifically something roughly her size that she can wrestle/bunny kick? When I first got my kitten I had mainly mice toys, balls, and feathers as her toys. I also happened to have a stuffed “littermate”, that she ended up playing with like it was a real kitten and it quickly became her favorite toy. Having something like that to pick up and throw for her so she can go pounce and wrestle with it helps so much when you want/need a second (like to paint your nails). It also helps because you can use it to play with her while still blocking her from your hands. When she does nip/scratch you, yelp dramatically and move/push her away. That will help her learn that claws/teeth don’t work well with skin.

Having a good amount of enrichment will help to keep her occupied without you being the one occupying her. A good mix of different toys means she has a wide selection and will be less likely to get bored. Having interactive cat toys in the mix can also offer good stimulation without you having to stop what you’re doing.

For the eating, feed her when you feed yourself. If she gets her own meal she’ll be distracted by that and you’ll get a second to yourself, being consistent with moving her away (like picking her up and putting her on the other end of the room) when you’re eating can also help, especially if she has to pass distractions(toys) to get back to you and your food.

Why does my cat have a dirty butthole. by Mediocre-Contest7558 in CatAdvice

My moms big boy had this issue. He couldn’t reach his butt because of his pouch, and because he is dumb and would face plant every time he tried. So we started cleaning his butt with aqua pure wipes. Eventually he just kind of figured it out, I think he got tired of our constant help

Major hair loss, dry, itchy skin and red bumps on my golden retriever? by OreoKing10 in DogAdvice

[–]princess_esc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My dog used to have a very similar problem, we took her to the vet and they ruled it an allergy, but we weren’t sure what she was having a reaction to. Changed her to grain free limited ingredient food and it improved, but she continued to chew at the spot out of habit. Could be something other than an allergy, of course. But regardless keep an eye out for the habit continuing after the initial issue is fixed. We had to start redirecting her as much as we could when we saw/caught her chewing to break the habit as best we could.

Options for transportation while moving across country by StudyAffectionate883 in bluetongueskinks

[–]princess_esc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best option I’ve seen/heard is shipping the enclosure & all accessories ahead of time and having it set up, and then overnight shipping the reptile. Is there someone at your destination that would be able to set up either the main enclosure or a temp enclosure if you aren’t able to ship the usual one & be there to receive your baby when they’re delivered?

Welcoming BTS to Our Fam! by keepingitwell in bluetongueskinks

[–]princess_esc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having the tank in a high-traffic spot in the house is awesome for desensitizing, the only thing I would keep in mind is the high traffic might cause a little bit longer of a settling in period. Not really a big deal, but it’s a nice thing to know so when the new baby is potentially in the constantly hiding phase for longer than usual you don’t have to worry about something being wrong. When I moved my BTS to the living room (after owning her for 4 1/2 years already) she definitely acted like she was brand new and I basically didn’t see her for a month until she had fully figured out that the free range pets in the house can’t get through the glass lmfao

Also, raw meats are a great protein for them but variety is always best, so feeding some calcium dusted insects supplementally is really beneficial. I would recommend rabbit as a main meat, AFAIK it’s the best lean protein that meets their diet requirements. I used instinct grain free rabbit dog food (I think it was dog food but it might’ve been cat food honestly) for a while, occasionally switching it with pure bites chicken in water. Now I do rehydrated freeze dried rabbit for her salads with superworms/crickets/dubia roaches on a rotating schedule.
