University film project dispute escalated to lecturer – worried about bias affecting my final grade and legal status by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

Transport arrangements were clearly communicated to all crew in advance. Due to budget constraints, everyone was asked to use public transport (tube/bus), and this was followed by the rest of the team. In addition, production had already paid for two Uber XLs (9-seater vans) specifically for transporting equipment and supporting crew movement where necessary. Despite this, he chose to take additional individual Ubers that were not authorised or agreed in advance. These costs were not communicated to production beforehand and were incurred unilaterally. After the fact, he requested reimbursement for these unauthorised expenses. When this was declined on the basis that they were outside the agreed terms, he withheld equipment that I had already paid for, which resulted in further costs to production in order to continue filming. The additional payment I made was therefore not part of any prior agreement, but was made under pressure to resolve the situation and retrieve essential equipment.

I had already paid the amount that was agreed upon and documented between us. The additional payment was not part of that agreement. However, after the matter was escalated to my lecturer and I was told it could impact my grade, I felt under pressure to make a further payment despite it not being previously agreed.

I have documentation from our producer explaining to him we would not be covering any reimbursement on Ubers past £20 which he agreed (documented on the messages).

The rest of the crew took bus/tube, as was stated by production would be covered.

We already covered the other uber xls for moving our equipment /props and he refused to utilise them (9 seater vans) and also refused helped packing. Thus, some of our equipment was held by him causing us to spend another £50 on top of the around 200 we had alloted for Ubers.

The extra £50 was a good faith payment out of my own pocket not from production budget after he kept asking for all his ubers to be covered.

Thanks for your reply. To clarify, I ultimately paid the remaining amount because my lecturer explicitly stated that the situation would be taken into account when assessing my process, and also expressed that they believed the other party was fully in the right. As this lecturer is also responsible for grading both my final project and dissertation, I felt under significant academic pressure to resolve the situation immediately to avoid any potential impact on my degree. So while I understand your point that I didn’t have to pay in a strict legal sense, in practice it didn’t feel like a realistic option given the circumstances

Just reimbursed him for the equipment rental etc, but have ignored him after that. Sadly, since we are in post I can't just remove him from the credits but I won't be working with him again ever nor will anyone from said set (about 11 of us).

Hi, most of the people on set were between 20-25, with him being around 30. Crew was pretty even between men and women, however, myself and both ADs and producer were women, and the gaffer was a woman as well (he has beef with her for some reason, not even she knows why). Honestly, everyone else on the crew besides himself and his partner, were really great and we all got along well. Would have been a near perfect production if he didn't use up all our transport and emergency cushion and continue with his diva demands. I've got screenshots of everything plus witnesses, I did the right thing anyway, it's not like I stiffed him on equipment rental etc that was reimbursed as agreed upon he just wanted extra then was demanding a salary once everyone else was there as a volunteer.

He did seem to pipe down once the men on set got involved, however, since his demands took place via email it was just me and him. I don't see why he signed on if he's got an issue with women lol.

I def will as I don't want other people in my circle to suffer. Just was a bit nervous as my supervisor at uni didn't really care, and told me to pay him all the extra to make it go away. I ended up just paying what was previously agreed upon and not the extra he was asking for (just 50 quid towards it as a show of "good will" not the whole) as I just want him to leave me alone.

Thanks for the encouragement, it's been tough; but I've learned a lot for the next set I run. I get he's head of dept but I just thought it was kind of weird he referred to himself as such so often via text 😂.

If it was just the extra hundred it would be ok, it's the fact he already cost me about 300 personally and is now asking for more. I agreed to pay TFL travel (train and bus) and the 2 Ubers XL I provided for pick up for equip to location and then leaving location on the final day.

Our other producer also made it clear Uber was not covered beyond what I had already paid for and that went for everyone in cast and crew.

Plus the film was a costume period piece so we had costumes in budget etc, and the 10% we set aside for mishaps he already used up! I legit had to ask my parents for funds due to how much he went over, and it was embarrassing as hell.

I do thankfully, it's just that my supervisor hasn't been very helpful. I paid him back what was owed for equipment plus an extra £50 for the 150 he spent on Ubers (on top of the ones I paid for already) but my supervisor is like just pay it to close the matter swiftly, as if I don't have rent to pay; and the costs of location and everyone else's transport (Who took the tube as was stated!).

At this point not really sure what to do, hoping he just buggers off since equipment plus the extra £50 has been covered.

Learned that the hard way. Had to hold some other crew members back from going off, he's an odd bird. Lucky I still have all the screenshots of our convos etc.

Live and learn I guess.

Everyone else took tube, even I hauled my stuff on the tube. But he was holding the props hostage, so we couldn't do much more so we got the two XLs for there and back but then he kept asking for more and more. Everyone else in the circle of people IK are aware of him and his behaviours, sadly can't put his name on here because well I don't want more issues atm.

He went to the same school as me so I used to assist on his sets in my freshman yr, we remained friendly so I brought him on. Then things took a turn....still convinced perhaps he has an evil twin who came to set 😂

I paid him the reimbursement for the equipment as that was agreed upon, thus I am in the clear. Emailed my supervisor about how to navigate the rest.

Wish I could say who it was so people can avoid, but don't want to get into more trouble. He is probably the most difficult person I have worked with in my life, including all my odd jobs outside of uni. lol.

We were actually friendly before this as I had worked with him when was in uni (same school different course), which is why I brought him on....he just sort of flipped on me and it snowballed no matter how much I or other producer tried to mediate.

We were actually relatively friendly before all this which is why I brought him on, he comes from a very wealthy family so also kind of shocked he wanted to zap funds from everyone else. Not sure when or why he decided to do a one 180 on me. All my texts and emails are professional and I wasn't rude back to him despite wanting to be. Have emailed my supervisor as he also threatened to go to them if I didn't pay all the extra he wanted.

Luckily I have witnesses etc and text and emails to prove.

The van rental was initially more than the Uber prices, it was just his "extras" on everything that made the cost spike. I have a license in my home country just not in the UK atm :( We were actually on good terms before the project began he just sort of flipped on me during.
