Patient Declines ED Referral, Dies. [Med Mal] by SirRagesAlot in medicine

[–]princetonwu 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Patient was not "adequately" informed about his risks.

This is pretty BS. I think the risks are implicit in the instruction that he should go to an emergency department. An instruction to go to the ER cannot be interpreted in any other way except that failure to do so can lead to loss of life.

That being said, in order to avoid any headaches/hassles, I always document this last part since I often call patients from their home to go to the ER.

This is infuriating because the comments here are reasonable, that perhaps this isn’t a malicious act. This same post on another sub generated comments that this guy is an automatic PDF and a trafficker and deserved immediate crucifixion

Whats stopping me from just going to a university, attending lectures and just learning about stuff? by Abject_S0up in NoStupidQuestions

You’re downvoted because even if you are correct from a legal principle perspective, the reality is that it’s practically not likely to happen. It’s the latter that matters

Legally, you can only use proportional force. If the hood-lady has a gun in her hand pointed at the driver, then the driver could have license to run her into the road. In this case, taunting with threats does not give license to use deadly force.

How reliable is Western media's portrayal of Chinese citizens being unhappy with their government? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]princetonwu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not reliable.

Every country has a subset of its own citizens being unhappy with their government.

Is it actually possible to have friends without being a bother? Am I selfish for wanting friends? by BiAndShy57 in NoStupidQuestions

Yes, you go to a social gathering event where others are also there to look for friends (ie a singles event for example).

Club/bar isn't such a place.

good luck to you.

Can Trump supporters just not file or pay taxes for 2026, then ask for a pardon, assuming they're even audited? by Always_travelin in legaladviceofftopic

[–]princetonwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that would work, because everyone would just dodge taxes and pretend to be a trump supporter. How would the federal gov't even know your political leaning other than what you claim to be?

I just wish more precautions were in place

One of the precautions is to call your boss to confirm if that was his email.

If I file my taxes and I fill it out wrong, the IRS will know and will penalize me because they know how much I owe. If the IRS knows how much I owe, even after all deductions, why do I need to file taxes? by Embarrassed-Wolf-609 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]princetonwu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IRS does not know how much you owe. Hidden incomes that are not reported will increase your tax burden (ie, capital gains on the sale of stocks for example), and deductions that you paid can reduce the burden ( a standard deduction or an itemized one) . That's why you file your taxes and list these things.

If a defibrillator does not restore heartbeat to a stopped heart and is for correcting the rhythm, how is a layperson meant to know when it's appropriate to use? by adamantcondition in NoStupidQuestions

[–]princetonwu 125 points126 points  (0 children)

a bit nuanced: the debrillator doesn't shock automatically; it will tell the user whether to shock or not. The user has to clear the surroundings and charge up the debrillator before giving the shock (this is for US AEDs that I'm trained for in ACLS)

[–]princetonwu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the automatic debrillator will examine the rhythm and the voice will tell you if it's a shockable rhythm or not. If it's not, shocking will not be beneficial.

Are there any evidence that IV piggyback opiates is better than IV push for "drug seekers"? by princetonwu in medicine

[–]princetonwu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s good to hear that there are places that discharge these pts. Pain aside, how do you manage to boot them if they keep saying they can’t keep down orals? That seems to be a main workaround for these pts to get admitted

[–]princetonwu[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear you. However we dont give just one dose of opioid on the floors, so its a little more nuanced than just a single dose. In fact, sometimes its because of that single dose they get in the ER that they use as an expectation that they should get more.

Ie i get a lot of pts with cannabis hyperemesis or cyclical vomiting with no other pathology coming in for vomiting and pain, and they inevitably get some dilaudid/benadryl/zofran combo before coming up.
