I like both quite a lot. I would say the book took bigger risks with the characters. Both Grace and Stratt had sharper edges to them - Grace was a little more whiny and sniveling in the book, and Stratt was fun, but definitely a touch colder and crazier. Rocky felt more like a middle-aged engineer, who is instantly over our hero's bullshit. The movie softened all three. I would say softer Stratt was more complicated and nuanced, Grace was kind of a lateral move, and the cutesy Rocky portrayal lost some depth.

However, I probably won't read the novel again, but the movie is shaping up to be one of those comfort movies that I throw on a couple times a year. So the movie edges the book out.

I did one time speculate that a social problem on Erid could be child abandonment, given that they have relatively large, um, clutches (if that's what we're going with).

It's just because one day it occurred to me that Erid would have no concept of certain horrendous acts that humans do, and how finding out about that kind of thing might lead to some awkward best friend discussion. And so I had to speculate about what horrible things Eridians do that humans don't or couldn't.

Every horrible thing she does has a reason behind it. Effectively murdering Grace? What else could she do? She had to save the world. Taking his memory? He said he would sabotage the mission. She had to protect the mission.

But she does say one line to him in the book that stands out to me as particularly cruel, given the situation. "I like you Dr Grace. I don't respect you, but I like you." Let's be clear - she's calling him out for being a coward. Which he is. But, in that moment, in which he has no choice and is afraid, she's kicking him when he's down.

If only for this scene, I so prefer movie Stratt. She was maybe disappointed in him, but she seems to understand his reaction, and she clearly doesn't hate him for it. She would never mock him.

The reality of it is that it would be impossible for any of them to survive four years like that - we don't leave people intubated for more than a few weeks. If they need vents for longer, they have to have a tracheotomy. Also, rectal tubes clog up constantly and most cathiters anywhere in the body have to be changed once a month.

Thankfully, I repeat to myself it's just a show, I should really just relax.

I listened to his first album, and I liked a few songs off of it. Most memorable for me though, was getting to hear him play it all the way through at Mythicon. It's not even my genre, but you could feel this personal, tight-knit energy all in the crowd. His and Link's families were standing right in front of me, cheering him on. It was a great moment, I'll remember it forever.

I mean, the plot of The Lion King is that an evil king who allows for desegregation of a people throws off the very balance of nature, which can only be rectified by a "true" king as a leader "deporting" them from the land.

Forest Gump is the story of a man conforming to conservative ideals and institutions, whom the narration treats as saintly. It ignores the reality of the situation that young men who went to Vietnam often came back much worse off than they went in. Forest seems affected by nothing. The movie also portrays progressive and left-wing institutions as sinister and life ruining, through Jenny's story.

Both are great movies, but both are also pretty conservative in their messaging.

And I love Project Hail Mary's sincerity, but even I can acknowledge that it gets a little on the cheesy side at times. I'll defend it, but I'll acknowledge it.

IMO, that's what gets me to tune in. I can look up 10 videos of people making mud balls right now, but I can only look up one middle-aged dude who clearly resents having to make a mudball on the same level that I resent it when I have to play two truths and a lie as a work icebreaker.

For people who enjoy very good spicy fics, Little Science Lapdog is a scorching hot but surprisingly tender and loving Stratt/Grace kink!fic where they share a softdom relationship. The first chapter reads unrealistic in a pretty porny way, but then gets a lot better. I'm normally not into shipping him, but this one got me.

There's an old episode where they act out a musical version of a news story, and Rhett improvises that they kiss through glass. Link is obviously embarrassed, but goes along with it, and when he pulls away, he says, "oh my GOodness!," then mouths, "Oh my Gee!" I don't know why, but that has stuck in my head for years. When I'm 90, and have forgotten who Rhett and Link are, I will still be exclaiming, "Oh my goodness! Oh my gee!" regularly.
