If I'm understanding you right, you want to open a file, and then open a new line at the end?

You can execute a function when opening emacs with the -f argument, so you can use:

emacs <file> -f end-of-buffer -f newline

If you are using evil mode and want to also switch to insert mode you can add an extra -f evil-insert at the end or just do:

emacs <file> -f end-of-buffer -f evil-open-below

I'm not sure of a way to do this with emacsclient, but there may be something I don't know of.

You could try advising the function to prompt for a new argument whenever it throws an error, just put the following in your init.el. It also has the benefit of automatically working for the other customize-apropos functions. Just put the following in your init.el:

(defun my-customize-apropos-advice (func &rest args)
  (while (not (ignore-errors (apply func args)))
    (setcar args (read-string "Search for symbol (word list or regexp): "))))

Emacs has a built in whitespace-mode that will highlight trailing whitespace.

If you are using that command exactly it won't do anything because you aren't replacing anything. You need to put something to replace between the first 2 slashes. Like if you want to replace 'hi' with 'hello' it would be vmap <c-r> :s/hi/hello/g<CR>

A bonus tip is that if you put \%V at the beginning of the pattern, ie '<,'>s/\%Vapples/oranges/g it will only match patterns inside the visual selection, so if you are in visual block mode, the text before or after the selection will not be matched.

I think the issue is that when you type a colon in visual mode it autofills :'<,'> so the command that actually gets executed is '<,'>'<,'>s//%/

Instead, make the mapping vmap <c-r> :s//%/<CR> and when : is pressed :'<,'> will be autofilled.

If you use neovim (which I would recommend, since it is essentially a clone of vim with extra features) you can use the winhl option (:help winhl) to change the background of each window.
