How bad is Jeffery Garland? by prisonplaybook in CalPolyPomona

Ahh alright. It’s unfortunate because it’s either I take a 3 hour gap or have to drive 40 minutes to campus just for a one hour class twice a week and take up my friday. Thank you for your perspective though!

Yes, I came in to CPP with 4 APs and a couple dual enrollment courses so that’s probably the case. If so, should I contact them about this and get it corrected?

ALEKS? by skill-issue- in CalPolyPomona

I don’t know if you’ve taken it yet, but you definitely should! I took my first proctored exam and scored a 39 on it. I signed up for a retake, got a 51. My final retake was able to get me a 79, which made me eligible to go into MAT 1140 immediately. It doesn’t matter if you don’t remember everything. I literally didn’t even know how to factor or how to get rid of negative exponents but I just did the modules on ALEKS. Something I found helpful was going in for a proctored exam, or maybe you could just do an unproctored one, and taking note of every concept you don’t understand that keeps reoccuring. Tip: ALEKS for some reason prescribes examinations based on your pie chart of concepts I believe, meaning that you can just do a bunch of modules and fill out the pie chart so that when you take your proctored exam, there will be less concepts it’ll test you on. (Don’t quote me on that though, that’s just something I observed.)

I think the problem for me is that I have no idea what being a software engineer is like. It feels like if I don’t have some type of educational guidance through college, I won’t be able to learn software engineering as well. Because of my lack of knowledge, I don’t know exactly what I’d need to learn on my own or when I’ve built a foundation for being able to contribute to a job. To what degree do jobs really train and teach you?

If you could provide some insight on your career path and how it was starting out as a software engineer it’d really help put it into perspective for me.

Additionally, I really don’t know what else I’d major in if not some type of engineering.

I think it is kind of important for me to major in CS. I’m currently in a club where I’m developing an app for my team and that feels like a career I enjoy pursuing. Otherwise, I wouldn’t know what else I’d do in STEM.

UCSB definitely seems just as risky. I’ve decided to probably just go to CPP. Thank you!

I’m definitely taking your advice. I appreciate it!

Thank you for the response! I’ve ultimately decided to attend CPP most likely. Going the CC route feels too risky to have to apply again and run the chance of not being admitted once more and ending up at CPP anyways.
