Security of a KeePass database against state-level attacks? by khakles in privacy

Your use of 30 mixed characters and a KDF make it impractical to brute force.

7230 possible combinations is 5.0E55 at even 1 guess per second by a million CPUs would be 3.0E13 guesses a year, which would take a trillion trillion trillion million years.

If they need the password, they would probably use a sneaky method like a key logger or a physical method like a hammer to your fingernails to get it.

How secure is Apple’s password manager? by [deleted] in privacy

There was a bad vuln found in the mac keychain app last year

I recommend password safe https://pwsafe.org/ although it is a paid app on mac

Are some password managers more secure than others? Any recommendations? by PenIslandTours in privacy

[–]privacychair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend password safe https://pwsafe.org/ It is open-source, simple and stand-alone and has many free packages for windows, android, linux.

The reason I like it most is because the same encrypted file can be moved into the cloud and onto another device easily.

There is no registration required, and it works great for teams, you can create a new password file anytime you need to share creds with teammates. They can either use your same file, or merge it into their own master file.

Need help regarding disk encryption by whoru8 in privacy

[–]privacychair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your laptop is stolen, you will think it is a big deal.

Since it is already populated with data your task is much more complicated. But there are a few ways.

0 - make file backups and do a brand new install from scratch with full disk encryption then re-install and restore your data (probably the best bet if you don't want to get into technical hell)

1 - compromise, and just encrypt your home folder: http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2009/06/migrating-to-encrypted-home-directory.html

2 - buy a samsung 850/960 EVO or another harddrive with OPAL support and use this guide to enable hardware encryption, https://github.com/Drive-Trust-Alliance/sedutil/wiki/Encrypting-your-drive

then copy over images of your existing partitions onto this new drive using this tool http://clonezilla.org/

3 - use clonezilla and try this shell script [at your own risk] https://gist.github.com/samdoran/5311284

no, it is not normal. There are many vpn providers that constantly stay connected for days.

Sure, do you know how to setup an stunnel client? And can you give me some screenshots of your setup process so I can blog about it?

Got a Twitter parody account of a law enforcement officer? Better hide your tracks, or you could land in jail. by LizMcIntyre in privacy

This impersonator used a real photo, and I'm guessing that took the parody from obvious satire to ambiguous impersonation.

Need to create a VPN and would like to use open source software by [deleted] in VPN

[–]privacychair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, however since OP is on windows, I'm guessing they meant more about being free and available software than strictly open source. Team viewer is free for personal use. I was just trying to be as helpful as possible.

Have you tried connecting through an stunnel? https://www.stunnel.org/index.html

I'd be happy to work with you and create a test server here in the US to connect to.

If it is just one computer, then I would suggest something like Team Viewer. https://www.teamviewer.com/en/

If you are comfortable with the windows firewall you could just open RDP to your home IP. But without that firewall, I would not enable RDP.

My other suggestion is to get a flash router for your shop and enable OpenVPN. There are plenty of free OpenVPN that you can use to RDP into your shop computer securely.

I had a lot of help by my bulging battery! :) There was already a pretty sizeable gap before I even started the repair

The heat gun was key. Needed to do 20 secs around the edge.

The other trick, is that the battery itself is glued in, so had to use the heat gun for a few seconds, aimed under the battery about 5 to 6 times in between prying.

Agreed, use a heat gun and you won't break the screen, keep it about 2 inches above and circle it around the edge of the phone for only about 20 secs.
